FREE SWIM!

It’s Monday which means it’s Free Swim day. Actually, you’ll probably see a lot more free swim days now that we’re pushing towards the end of January. The fact that it’s January 21st and we haven’t missed any posts yet is pretty sweet. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. As a quick update, we’ve had over 500 posts at this point. 220 more should be cake. (should be?) though I suspect that this is the week where I will start severely eroding my post supply.

But! let’s keep pushing onward. Enjoy today’s mix!

Also, let me know what you think of that sweet Chtulu mspaint.

What is this love of mspaint? I mean William Faulkner scratched his first story on the bottom of a wheelbarrow, but he was smart enough to use a typewriter when he could afford one. Still – good Art!

It’s a sort of dichotomy – the practice of creating something unexpectedly aesthetic and complicated in detail, from a program which is seen by most to be little better than do-it-yourself 1980’s NES graphics. The challenge of creating great art using only such a blunt graphical instrument is something that scratches Mike D right where he itches.

However, MSPaint is full of little secrets, and when you really get down to it, you’ll die trying to find a program that’s better designed in every way for a basic function. Its understated simplicity and succint perfection is the mark by which all other computer programs must be judged – and so far I just keep throwing things around my office when those programs keep failing me.

ALSO – I’ll reiterate my office comment of today – kickin picture man!
Perfect gradient usage (both linear in the background, and a radial gradiant on his forehead – bonus points!), and an excellent color contrast. A+!
