I remember when I first went away to college (eleven years ago? dang) I reveled in all those luxuries that are typically denied of youth. I had ice cream, milkshakes, and pizza constantly. I didn’t fold my clothes. I played video games like it was my job.
Slowly those things faded away and I mostly realized that life is better when it’s organized and fairly well rounded. These days I appreciate vegetables, I prefer productivity to video games, and cleanliness is respected – even if it’s not perfectly adhered to. Since then, I’ve settled into a somewhat sustainable zone of maturity that would make my parents proud.
Except for the fact that I still find nothing more satisfying than chocolate cake for breakfast. Add a cup of coffee? SHUT UP YES. DELICIOUS.
It’s like a theme park of sugar and caffeine in my mouth and I love it. Maturity? You can take the hallway wrestling matches. Take the handstand kicking duels and the 4am ultimate frisbee games. You can have the exploding gingerbread houses and the Ramen Noodle Iron Chef tournament. But hands off my breakfast of chocolate cake and coffee. Hands off.
This one’s mine.

So I guess Ultimate Extreme Darts is out too, huh?
For those following at home, Ultimate Extreme Darts is playing Darts from across the street through a window on the second floor of a barn.
If you hit the board, you’re pretty much guaranteed a win.
I hardly ever drank coffee in college. I think I had maybe three or four cups of coffee in eight years (undergrad and grad school). I didn’t start drinking coffee regularly until our fourth child was born. It became a necessity when #3 and #4 would tag team waking us up. Now I don’t need coffee to function, but I do enjoy it.
Oh man. I can only imagine the mind numbing mornings that follow a night of two sleepless children. Right now I enjoy one cup of coffee a day – when my chance with children rolls around I suspect I will upgrade to a pot a day.
Welcome to my family. If there was any kind of leftover desert it was always an allowed breakfast food. My favorite desert for breakfast is definitely fruit pies, especially cherry.
The boundaries of the typical breakfast need to be more formally broken.
I’d love to see a breakfast joint that offered cherry pie on the menu.
Oh man, I definitely should have drank coffee in college. There were too many classroom naps.
Also, plenty of people in cake in the morning. They’re called muffins. Just don’t tell those people that.
What about pancakes?
I love dessert for breakfast. I mean, what’s the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?
One destroys Cities and the other should only be a top.
I had apple crisp and coffee for breakfast this morning… seriously the best part of waking up.
Productivity over video games?! Who are you? King would be dissappointed.
