I think most people have a favorite doughnut, and I don’t think I’m alone in my change of doughnut tastes over the years.
Back when I was little, it was the powdered lemon filled doughnut that was irrefutably my favorite. That sweet lemon filling with its sugary powdery dusting? Unmatched. But then somewhere in my middle school years my tastes shifted. Suddenly the filling didn’t do it. I needed a simpler kind of sweet; I transitioned to the basic glazed doughnut. In high school, it was back to the filling with an added need for chocolate. When doughnut shop trips were in order, I was there for the Boston Cream.
Post college I reverted back to the plain glazed. But recently? Recently there has been an unexpected twist. With my new appreciation for coffee, there’s a special place on my pallet for the plain doughnut. And interestingly, when coffee isn’t there to accompany the doughnut, I’m all about the chocolate glazed.
I wonder what’s next for Mike D. doughnut appreciation. Could it be the coconut topped? or perhaps even the personally unappealing Jelly?
Only time will tell.
Please feel free to share your doughnut progressions in the comments.
My coworker brought in “real” non-dunkin-donuts doughnuts…. wow, I never realized just how much DD tastes like cardboard.

1985-1994: Powdered Dunkin Donuts filled with strawberry frosting
1994-2002: Boston Cream
2002-2009: Complete and utter devotion to maple bars
(Also, because of this post, there will probably be a box of donuts on the counter when you get home from work today… )
I am also very fond of coffee and plain doughnuts, but I am known to enjoy a chocolate or regular glazed from time to time.
I like plain glazed, chocolate, chocolate glazed, and glazed chocolate. But my favorite is the Bavarian cream-filled chocolate-glazed long john. It was so sad when the supermarket that made these delicious doughnuts went out of business. Walmart’s bakery just doesn’t cut it.
Apple cider doughnuts!!!
I have committed to a strict regimen of Boston cream and chocolate glazed since birth and have since not wavered an iota.
Weeeelll, you know those really cake-y blueberry ones…. sometimes I stray.
Anything with Pink frosting.
I’ve pretty much always been committed to the chocolate frosted (with or without sprinkles). I went through a boston cream phase, but have reverted back to the classic. Also, I totally agree that once you have a donut from a mom and pop shop, it’s tough to go back to Dunkin Donuts!
When I was little I loved the white cream, chocholate frosting doughnuts from the local bakery down the street. I remember walking there with my Mom or Dad on special days to get a treat. I still prefer white cream filled to this day.
Although my favorite doughnuts are and always will be those made by my Grandma. Had some just a few weekends ago on a visit, doughnuts hot and fresh from the fryer, Amazing, and now I have the recipe.
Always and 4eva chocolate glazed. I have not strayed, I have not cheated. They are my first and only love. It is tragic that there is not a Dunks out here.
Boston Cream has been my favorite donut since circa 2001
