Day 6: Opening Sentence.

Write the opening sentence for your Debut novel sounds like a good thing to do, but it was actually kind of tough. Should I be serious? What about some drama, or romance. There is a list of good openers right here like “Call me Ishmael.”, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” and “Hale knew they meant to murder him before he had been in Brighton for three hours.” 3 MikeD points go out to the people who can name those books. But back to the task for today. I went for something I think would fit the First Novel I write pretty good; “Well shit, that wasn’t what I expected.” Tell me what you think.

Moby Dick, the Bible, and I have no idea about the last one.

Opening sentences are really hard. I’ve written a few, and I usually rewrite several times before I deem one acceptable. However, they’re much easier than closing sentences. I suck at closure, so unless I want to write a series, I guess I should work at that.

I do like your opening line. It makes me want to read more, which is what it’s supposed to do. You’re off to a good start.

Hmm not sure about the 3rd book either.

I really like your opening line. Let’s just say, if I were to open this book and read that, I would continue.

My favorite opening line to a book ever is Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke. The opening line is, “If you’re going to read this, don’t bother.”
