This morning I wasn’t listening to the radio on the drive to work. I was just hanging out riding the route.
Suddenly, about 50 feet before my exit I thought
“hmm, I wonder if U2’s One is playing on 105.9″
I turned the radio on, switched to 105.9… and sure enough U2’s One is playing.
I’m sure this has happened to all of us. I wonder if there is some scientific explanation for this strange clairvoyance or if it’s just stunning coincidence. Until I investigate further I’m going to have to assume coincidence.
So we can add “can detect and interpret electromagnetic waves with his brain” to the List Of Mike D’s Superpowers?
It seems relatively normal to have a particular song in mind. But to also have the station in mind and achieve success seems much less likely. If I had been a math major, I might be able to spit out some numbers.
That’s awesome. I had a similar experience once. I was singing a song and turned on the radio and the song was playing at the exact point I was singing. It was weird.
Are you a witch?
I’ll be the skeptic. Even if the odds are astronomical, how many times have you changed a radio station or turned on a radio in your life? A lot. And I’d bet that a lot of the time you subconciously had some sort of song in mind. It’s going to happen sooner or later.
Once you take into account that 105.9 is a ClearChannel station, the odds rise significantly, since they all play the same damn music.
I am a little sad that Mike listens to clear channel stations, I always pictured him listening to independent stations
CT stations stink. Here are my radio settings:
1. NPR
2. PLR (classic rock)
3. DRC (older ‘rock’ like S.Wonder and such)
4. River (Clearchannel classics)
5. (forget the call sign) Springfield’s classic rock
6. University of New Haven’s college radio
There are ZERO alternative stations. And the only other real independent radio station is too much WAAF and not enough FNX (boston radio comparison).
I should add:
I like the River (clearchannel) because it’s the only station in CT that seems totally okay with playing Journey.
and I love Journey.
Move to Seattle.
Turn to 90.3 KEXP. (or listen at http://www.kexp.org)
Leave radio alone forever.
I’ve occasionally had that happen too. Though I will usually finish the song before I turn the radio on. More often I will be thinking of a song and turn the radio on to hear the ending of the song. That’s frustrating.
