If I beat Mike home, I play video games for a little bit, then we watch the news, I make dinner, we eat dinner, and we watch TV. Yeah, boring. If he gets home first, I just don’t play video games. If I’m cranky, I spend an hour or more at the piano. If I’m tired, I pass out on the sofa.
Fridays there’s less TV, we almost always go out for dinner, and we’ll generally watch a movie, from DVD or sometimes in the theatre.
I don’t think that’s necessarily boring. I’m trying to get a feel for people’s social interaction and personal time on a daily basis. Watching Television is, for many, a reward after a day of bustle.
And piano when you’re cranky is a good move. I do the same with my guitar.
Even still, do you have evening routines that you go through? What happens on a typical night of Jes Saint? I would imagine it’s very different for someone with kids than it is for someone like me.
I usually get home at 6pm-7pm, walk the dogs, make dinner, eat, clean up… then I try to do at least an hour of something productive, guitar, work with photos, read a book, anything not tv related… then it’s like 9-10pm and i watch a little tv/a movie and then i go to sleep.
Alternately, on days I’m burnt out and had a bad day I’ll skip doing anything productive, eat leftovers, and veg the hell out for a few hours.
Since we drive together Tom and I are always home at the same time, just after 5pm usually. Our routine depends on wether it is a masters swim night or not. Usually we get home and turn on the TV and don’t do much for 1/2 -1 hour. Then it’s either getting some snacks or getting dinner together. Swim nights easy-ish dinner(no more than 30 min prep and cook, we’re gone for swimming from 6:45 to 8:20) other nights it could be a more complex 1 – 1 1/2 hours of cooking dinner, once dinner’s ready we turn off the TV and sit down for dinner. I really like taking the time to sit together for dinner, we do ocassionaly have couch dinners but I really like eating at the table with the TV off. Then it’s off to swimming, or watching some more TV or video games. Usually I’m knitting or sewing or doing some other project and Tom is always working on some programming stuff. Depending on the time of year non-swimming nights I’ll usually go out for a run or bike before dinner. Around 9pm we’re usually done for the night and settling in for some desert(often just a fruit smoothie or orange julius) or ice cream if we feel like it and then getting ready for bed by 10pm.
So basically it’s just the two of us all night lazing about doing household things. We’re most likely to spend time with friends on the weekends and rarely on weeknights. It feels boring all typed down and it’s hard to capture the feeling that this evening routine brings. I really love this routine and coming home and cooking a good dinner and spending the evening with Tom brings me a lot of joy.
I usually work till 6ish in Clinton, at which point I do FIRST related stuff with my kiddies till usually 8+, depending on the night. I then hit the gym from 9-10 pm, eat supper by 10:30-11, then do homework till about 1 am. If it’s a Friday, I’m typically at the Palladium from 6pm-1am after Nypro.
Mondays: Try and actually cook a reasonable meal and play guitar
Tuesday: Rock Climb in Worcester
Wednesday: Dodgeball, then go out for dinner/drinks
Thursday: Alternate between dinner/drinks with coworkers or hang out with whoever’s around. Occasionally watch Tivo.
Friday and Saturday: Varies
Sunday: Guitar, clean my room, do laundry, upload pictures from the week, obtain/listen to new music
I suppose the typical evening starts when the kids get off the bus. I supervise homework and/or make supper. If it’s a bath night, I supervise baths.
After supper, I do any number of household things, anything that needs to be done for the next day, chase the kids, or use the laptop to write fanfic or watch videos on the internet. Sometimes I play computer games.
After the kids go to bed, I’ll either watch tv or play on the laptop some more while my husband uses the Dell to do his internet stuff. The television is usually on. On rare occasions, we watch a movie together.
On nice summer evenings, I’ll take a walk and sing to the cows. I may play my guitar, or stay in and read a book.
Mondays I have a quick snack then go to Ultimate practice. The rest of the week, assuming I don’t have anything social planned (e.g. meeting people in town for drinks or whatever), I just spend the evening on the net and watching TV. Some time around 10pm I usually realise I’m really hungry and cook dinner. Some nights I’ll play videogames for a couple of hours too (currently Neverwinter Nights 2 and the Defcon demo).
I usually either run or mountain bike within an hour of getting home. Then, shower, eat something, and go back and forth between watching TV and messing around on the internet, depending on if I like what’s on TV. Sometimes I’ll ride my BMX in the parking lot across the street at that time too. Or do some origami. Maybe quiet guitar playing. Asleep by 10, easy.
My schedule is similar to Jes Saint’s with a few exceptions. I do stay at home and what little work I accomplish is done at home. Most of my evenings are spent trying to survive until bedtime.
Homework is a constant struggle. I basically try to keep the kids from messing up the house too much. Sneak in some guitar, writing, computer games, reading, or internet. Then I usually have to be up in the night with one kid or another. Sometimes I get some reading done then. Sometimes not. I don’t love my schedule. I’m tired and sick and haven’t been able to write anything lately (novels, short stories, or songs). I hate when I can’t write.
Well, being a stay-at-home mom, I’m usually at home, and I”m always at work.

I think this sounds really pleasant. I am jealous of your schedule.
