Finally Friday

CT got biffed with snow this morning. Traffic was obnoxious.

While I sat in my car waiting for the Volvo in front of me to inch forward, I heard a piece on NPR about the efforts of Mississippi to improve its image. Apparently Mississippi is known for its poor education system, high poverty rates, and general uninspiring brilliance. Mississippi is ticked off! So the state is working to improve its image amongst the more classy states with an aggressive advertising campaign that informs the public that yes, there’s more to Mississippi than tractor pulls, hog callin’, and monster trucks.

If the cities in Mississippi are considered so deplorable, where are the best places to live? Well, it turns out Money Magazine put together a top ten list (2006).

1. Fort Collins, CO
2. Napervillie, IL
3. SugarLand, TX
4. Columbia, MD
5. Cary, NC
6. Overland Park, KS
7. Scottsdale, AZ
8. Boise, ID
9. Fairfield, CT
10. Eden Prairie, MN

So there you have it.

I rode my bike to work today to avoid the retarded traffic, and my feet were frozen into hooves by the time I got here. Six of one, half-dozen of the other.

Bismarck, ND used to be on that list, but rising teen alcoholism rates knocked it down.

Ah yes, “The OP”. If you like affluent suburbs of cookie cutter housing developments and fancy shopping centers (UUIG: think Alderwood Mall), Overland Park is the place to be. I grew up in Shawnee, which borders OP to the north. Every time I go back home, I inevitably find myself in Overland Park at some point, and I always think, “This place is nice, but it has no character.”

Boise is an interesting inclusion. I stayed a night there on my drive to Seattle, but it was dark and I didn’t do much there. I’ve heard that’s it’s actually a nice place for outdoorsy types, and they have an orienteering club, which is a great place to live in my book.

I like the sound of Sugarland too! There’s a country music group by the same name.

And, of course, on the other end of the music spectrum, there’s the Sugar Hill Gang.

Sugar Land is very close to where I’ll be in Texas next week.

Alright! The top ten worst places to live and I haven’t lived in any of them. Must be doing something right. Overland Park isn’t too far from where my big sis lived for a while. Unless I’m confusing it with some other place.

Topeka is one of the worst laid out cities in the country. Might be ok to live there but I sure didn’t like it when I visited.

Sugarland is a good group, with very good songs. But they get too much play in my area. It’s sad when a really catchy song becomes one you change the channel to avoid. (Yes, it can happen.)

Oh I definitely know what you mean. Sugarland is overplayed here too. It really is a bummer when a great song loses appeal simply because radio stations don’t mix things up enough.

That’s why I hardly listen to the radio these days. I get sick of hearing the same songs over and over. I’d rather hear too little of a good song than too much.
