Sander and I got to talking about Vegemite.
Sander: Do you know what vegemite is?
Mike D: I have no idea. Like some peanut buttery thing?
Sander: No, not at all. It’s like the left over yeast extract from beer making. Some old people in Austrailia insisted I try it.
Mike D: Any good?
Sander: It is disgusting. The saltiest grossness you can imagine. It was so salty I’d have gladly washed it down with a pint of Soy Sauce.
And there you have it! Vegemite!
I spent a semester in Australia 12 years ago. One of my Aussie roommates dared me to eat a giant spoonful of Vegemite.
I can still taste it. Yuccccckkkkkk.
Vegemite spread thinly on a toasted piece of sourdough with a fried egg and a top piece of toasted sourdough is actually pretty good. I’m not sure but I bet it falls into the umami category of tastes.
Eating it by the spoonful sounds disgusting. It’s vegemite, not nutella!
I love Vegemite! I have our Australian buddies bring it back for us (cheaper that way). I agree with Vivienne, eating it on toast, especially topped with an egg or melted sharp cheddar (or both!) is divine
