New Car Game!

I love car games. I love inventing car games and I love playing car games. Over the course of my years I might say, if I can be so bold, that I’ve come up with a few zingers. Recently, I came up with a great new one. It is designed around the concept of a spelling bee and it is called…

Onomatopoe-it!

In your typical spelling bee an official will read a word that requires spelling. The contestant then says the word, spells the word, and says the word one last time. Something like this:

Official: Rhinoceros
Contestant: Rhinoceros. R H I N O C E R O S. Rhinoceros.
Official: correct.

So take this same concept but apply it to onomatopoeias. The first person makes a ridiculous sound/noise. The second person must then spell it.

Example

Driver:pppphhhtskksg
Passanger: pppphhhtskks. P P P P H H H T S K K S. pppphhhtskks.

The first player will then judge the second player’s spelling.

Driver: Nope. There is CLEARLY a phlegmy ‘g’ sound at the end of pppphhhtskksg.

I encourage you to try this game with your peers. Please report back.

I will never forget the time you made us play the cheese game. I don’t remember the rules exactly, but I think it was to name a cheese, then name a cheese that started with the last letter of the last cheese. I don’t think we made it too far. Your car games are hilarious.

Ahh yes, you’re referring to QUADCHEESE.

This team game falls into the classic first letter last letter game structure. The rules went as follows:
      1. Match the first letter of your word with the last letter of the previously stated word.
      2. Go around in a circle naming anything found in a kitchen. Any kitchen, including kitchen stadium (words like Emu are totally fair) No repeats allowed.
      3. If you name a cheese… everyone gets a point. Any other kitchen items just progresses the turns.
      4. If you can link four cheeses in a row, everyone yells QUADCHEESE, the game immediately ends, and everyone wins.

It’s a good game, but is best played with new players as the older players learn cheese word strings that help them reach QuadCheese much more easily.

Prison Charge is good. This is one of my games that really has no connection to its title. I have no idea why we called it Prison Charge.

For best results, play this one with 4 people or more in the car.

Each person must make a sound and rhythm that the next person is to repeat. For example, a driver might click her tongue on a 2 and 4 beat. The person in the passenger seat would then start repeating this sound. The passenger then tells the person who sits behind them to snap their fingers on the 3 beat. All this time everyone except for the assigner must keep making their sounds. As you go around you add more and more sounds to the tune. When it gets back to the driver, she may have add a thigh slap or a funny melody whistle to the tongue clicking for the passenger.

Ultimately, this game ends when everyone feels that the tune has progressed to a point of ridiculousness.

I think it was you, me, sammyG and Evie going to a grand opening of Krispy Kreme somewhere. I also cannot remember why it was Prison Charge. But throwing your hand ups in the air when yelling CHARGE was mandatory.

I feel I should mention my favorite of all my games, it’s called FLY BY MY.

This is another one where 3 or more people is a must.

Person A provides a short rhyming word, for example: FLY.
    Person B repeats: FLY
    Person C repeats: FLY
    Person A repeats again!: FLY
Now, person B adds a rhyming word: FLY BY
    Person C: FLY BY
    Person A: FLY BY
    Person B: FLY BY
Person C now adds a rhyming word: FLY BY MY
    etc etc etc.

    Pro tips for advanced users:
    1. You are allowed to repeat previous words (fly fly fly by my fly fly is totally cool)
    2. After you’re 4 deep, you can instead making a crazy whistle sound. This indicates that the next person can change the rhyming word. So you might get something like this: “Big wig wig twig fig OOOOOWWOOO! Said wed stead fled red.

    Have Fun!
