The Derby Name.

My announcing gig is soon to kick off, so the time is near when I must officially decide on a Roller Derby name!! Some of the recommendations that came in were pretty awesome, let’s recap:

Dirk Flavorhouse
The Detonator
The Determinator
Spike D
Midnight Meat Train
Count Blockula
The Earl of Jam-wich
Rink Rash Randy
The Big Pierogi
Captain Suicides
Sir Talksalot
Harry Scaray
Howie Schlong
Rock Ness Monster
White Dynamite
Edward Killin’
Bout Shout DiDonato
Mic D

My personal favorites on this list are Mic D (clever but kinda boring in its same name-ness), The Earl of Jam-wich, and The Big Pierogi. In chatting with JK Elemenopee, I learned that it’s just as important to think about the shorthand version of the name which people will actually use. For example, there really isn’t one with The Big Pierogi – but with Earl of Jamwich, I’d actually just be called Earl. and that’s kinda weak. JK suggested perhaps I go with Mic D, The Earl of Jamwich.

What do you think good readers?

Well, I think “Mic D, The Earl of Jamwich” just might be too long… but now I bet I won’t stop thinking of that as your full title.

I’m kind of liking Spike D. To be called Spike is kind of not bad and you could gel your hair all spikey for the bouts.

Somehow, I still like The Detonator, since it has such a good back story….

Can i hear some of these in a sentence?
Like, “Welcome to roller derby, i’m your host Mike the Mic DiDonato!”

    Also, “Marshmallow Dragon Kick”.
    Think of that.

What about: Spike D., Earl of Jam-wich ?
It could have a good visual (the spikey hair) and has the Earl of Jam-wich in there, too.
AND! You will note that the royals always have their name before their official title, such as Catherine, Duchess of Elmhurst.

Personally, I’m a fan of (in no particular order):

    Sir Talksalot
    White Dynamite
    Bout Shout DiDonato
    Mic D

For some reason, Mic D seems extremely appropriate, but I can’t stop giggling over White Dynamite, which I think is my favorite.

If you’re planning on transitioning to skating with the men’s team, then I would consider some of the gameplay-specific names (i.e. Count Blockula).

I like Mic D, mostly as calling you Mike D all the time already makes me think of the Beastie Boys. Though to play off that as well, White Dynamite would be hilarious
