Recently, articles like this one peppered the web regarding the unfortunate consequences of sitting all day at a desk. While I’d consider myself fairly active, I’m definitely a member of the set that sits for more than 23 hours a week. At a minimum, I probably spend 5-6 hours a day in my office chair – yikes! So I decided to try and see if I could get by without a chair.
I hope to alternate between sitting on an exercise ball and standing. The former is said to activate those muscles used for balance and apparently also improve posture.
If nothing else, I anticipate that I will be much less likely to nod off at my desk.
I have had some back issues of late and I tried to raise my workstation so that I could stand all day, but that didn’t seem to work. I’m wondering if I should try the exercise ball…anything to reduce the back pain and build the core! Although of course we will look like Dwight from The Office.

I’m wondering if that lessens some of the core impact though, if you don’t have to stabilize yourself as much.
Interesting. My suspicion would be that yes, it would decrease impact. So far, any balancing I’ve had to do is to prevent this guy from rolling away.
I’ve noticed in the four hours I’ve been using this ball chair, I’ve been kinda continuously shifting and adjusting – probably a good thing.
As a teacher, I’m usually constantly standing and lecturing, but when I come home I have to sit in front of a computer to write my college lectures or grade papers and I could feel my posture deflating when I do it. I resorted to a rocking chair to try and improve it. But, I wouldn’t be below resorting to an exercise ball if you find it helps. Keep us updated!
