This is done with a technique called Sub-Pixel Antialiasing.

In a computer screen, each pixel consists of a tiny red, green, and blue light, arranged in that order.

Imagine a line runs through the left 2/3 of a pixel, but doesn’t cover the entire thing. We can fake out the Human eye by lighting up only 2/3 of that pixel. How do we do that? Remember that a pixel is made out of 3 components, a R G and B light.

So, we turn on only the tiny Red and Green lights, but do not turn on the tiny Blue light inside the pixel.

We do that by making that pixel Yellow. (In additive color mixing, yellow is made by combining 100% Red with 100% Green).

Pictures would help, but I hope you get at least the basic idea.
