Rock Star vs. Business Exec

There’s pretty much a constant discussion going on inside my heart about whether it’d be possible to become a rock star or whether it’d be possible to become a business exec and which would be more worthwhile. During a drive out yesterday to Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast, Sarah and I were discussing what value could be brought to the world from either of these professional persons.

Here’s the answer that resulted:

Who has made a larger impact on the world: Bono or Warren Buffet?

My inclination is to go with Buffet. His philanthropy is pretty much impossible to top – but Bono has a respectable amount of humanitarianism under his belt and the hard to value benefits of U2’s music influencing people. What do you guys think?

If it weren’t for entertainment television, I wouldn’t even know who Bono is, and I’m pretty sure I couldn’t name more than two of U2’s songs. But I know who Warren Buffet is. But that may have more to do with my upbringing.

I think business executive is a safer choice. Your success in business is determined by your own actions, whereas a rock star’s success is based on popularity of his music. And I think you could rock a suit.

Even if Bono cured cancer in addition to contributing to the Joshua Tree, he still contributed to the album Pop, and this is unforgivable.

Warren Buffet may drown a kitten before breakfast every day, and it still wouldn’t be as bad.

I have to go with Warren Buffet. While I know very little about the particular charitable donations of either figure, we must avoid giving Mr. Hewson any more credit for any kind of impact – at all costs. If Bono keeps getting any more full of himself, his ego may eventually black out the sun, which I suspect is what he’s wanted all along because he’s always wearing sunglasses like Riddick, and once he takes over the government we’ll all be forced to listen to increasingly bad U2 performances in exchange for electricity.

Not sure in these economic times that business executives are feeling all that “safe”.

Capitalism is on the brink, but Rock will NEVER DIE!
