Portland.

I’m in Portland, Oregon!

I left Hartford at 6:30am yesterday and flew to Phoenix. After in the plane for 5 hours I was starved. US Airways now charges $2 for a cup of water so I figured I’d wait ’till landing and spend my money on a nice burger instead of paying for access to a water fountain.

When the plane door opened I zipped out of there and went to the first restaurant I saw. It was a sports bar and right there on the menu was the bacon burger that my body craved. The waitress approached

“One Classic Bacon Burger Please!” I requested gleefully
“It’s 8:45am. we’re not serving lunch yet.” And thus began my trip

Once I arrived on the west coast, things got better. Alicia and Dwane picked me up from the airport. We went back to their cute apartment and made some eats. Then we went walking over to a fun little shopping area got some coffee and walked around a bit more. Upon getting back to the apartment we relaxed, made sweet garage band tunes, and then watched the debate. I suspect today will be full of more adventures. Hopefully I’ll be able to upload some pictures tonight.

It’s true. that wasn’t even an exaggeration.

    $2 cup of water
    $2 can of soda
    $2 juice
    $5 earphones for the movie
    $5 snack pack
    $7 sandwich lunch
    $7 alcoholic beverage
Unknown cost: checked baggage (I did all carry-on)

    Dang.

And this is why Southwest and Jetblue are the best airlines ever.

Allegedly there is a SWEET loophole for those of you who desperately thirst in-flight but like me are FAR too cheap to pay $2 for water (heard on NPR). For medical reasons (like if you need to take pills), the airline is REQUIRED to provide water for that purpose. I don’t think it’s much, but it’s something for a parched palette. They don’t want people drinking from the bathroom faucets.

“US Airways spokesman Morgan Durrant says … that water is safe to drink, just not very palatable… Frankly, that’s just not classy…”

Recently I’ve taken to carrying some ibuprofen on planes so that I could pretend to take my “necessary meds” if need be. It actually hasn’t come up yet since I’ve flown only carriers who coincidentally provide free beverages still, but it’s not a bad idea for anyone in the future. Sugar pills would also suffice I suppose. A tic-tac? Might be further over the line that one is willing to go, but if you got the guts…

Or, you could just bring an empty bottle and fill it in the airport once you’ve cleared security. But where’s the fun in that?!

I’m among the ranks of water bottle fillers. Especially for 4+hour flights. The measly 1-2 cups of liquid they might provide is just not enough beverage for me for that long of a flight.
