PROJECT = DONE (basically)

Last night Early this morning our group finished the last bits of our presentation for this semester’s MBA class. It took a ton of work, but I think it came out pretty decently. It was a bit annoying because certain members of the group really weren’t participating that much.

Project work can be really draining. I may have mentioned my problem with project groups before. In an academic environment, if one person doesn’t pull their weight – everyone else suffers heavily and the person who didn’t participate will probably get the same grade – worst case maybe they drop a letter. In a job environment, if one person doesn’t pull their weight – they get fired.

It can be frustrating for sure.

    Congrats on getting it done!

    When I was finishing my Business Admin degree we interned at a place as a group project for the whole semester. At the end, the grade they gave our group was a “group average” and then we evaluated one another. How we evaluated one another determined whether we were below or above the group average and were given a grade based on the evaluations and where that placed us in regards to the group average. Made things more fair and there was enough people in the group that it would have been hard to lie. Probably one of the few group projects where I felt everyone got the grade they deserved.

    I hated project groups in college for the same reason.

    Although my experience at work has been the same. Although it’s easier to get additional help at work, my experience has been that people are not fired if they don’t pull their weight. I’ve only seen two firings and both people were doing something ilegal (stealing from the company), turns out this will also get you arrested. Piss poor work and you could stick around for years (although you are the first to go if there is a layoff).

    That’s because those same people, when feeling their job security threatened, start talking up lawyers and lawsuits and scare the bejeezus out of their bosses. My husband used to work with a guy like that. They still haven’t fired that guy, just shuffle him around through different departments. It’s pathetic.

    I hated school group projects too. Although once when I was a senior, I had to take an intro to philosophy course to fulfill a graduation requirement. We had a group project at the same time I was finishing and installing my sculpture, so I flat out told my groupmates that I had no time, and that I was going to be “that guy.” And let me tell you, being that guy is really awesome.

    At least at work, your boss will notice someone not pulling their weight and/or you can more easily report the offender and perhaps get their behavior corrected before the project is done.
