Huh. You’re not having my week. I’ll bet my week sucks worse than yours.

Hmm. you know what we need? a stress rating level based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is as follow (from most to least important)

    1. Physiological: Air, food, water, sleep, excretion.
    2. Safety: security of body, employment, morality, family, health, and property
    3. Love/Belonging: Friendship, family, and intimacy
    4. Esteem: Confidence, Achievement, Respect of others and by others
    5. Self-actualization: creativity, spontaneity, morality, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts, peace

We do everything we can to satisfy those most important things first. Basically, if we have no food we’re a lot worse off than if we have no intimacy. Level five is very lofty and some people never get there – I think it’s associated with inner peace.

If we used a 1-10 scale for each level to rate our stability with each level, with 10 being the most secure, we’d get a decent understanding of our stress levels.

Mine would be something like this:
    1-10, 2-9, 3-6, 4-4, 5-2

    My Interpretation
1-10: totally secure with everything I need to survive the foreseeable future
2-9: Very secure with my possessions, though it could be improved slightly
3-6: I feel more loved than unloved, but there’s definitely a cut of loneliness in there
4-4: While I have decent respect and confidence at the moment, this is where I’m currently stressing. All the stuff at work and school is driving this number down. I feel like I’m failing a bit, and that’s annoying.
5-2: Not too much time for self-actualization. I’m too busy trying to get #’s 3 and 4 in order. But this doesn’t worry me.

So I don’t have it too bad, it’s only that I’m getting worn down on the Esteem level.

How do you guys measure up?

Also, as mentioned, I do have cake. And that’s a major thumbs up to any situation.

I like your rating system! You could also maybe say, “I’m having a bad #3 and 4 today.” Oh, but then there’s a problem if someday you have to say that you had a bad #2… Anybody who has a high 5 (love it! get it?) is doing awesome.

I’m in your boat, but backwards– my #3 is iffy, and 4 is medium. Poor Mike D., being stressed is no fun. But you’re SO RAD because even when you’re stressed you’re still able to write excellent posts. :)

Cake fulfills esteem and self-actualization, at least for me.

I seem to remember someone once saying that if you perfect number 5, you no longer need number 1. *

That someone who achieves nirvana can survive without food, water, or sleep.

Just the mere fact that you can come up with that really awesome post proves that you’re doing just fine, Mike D.

I’m not sure how to rate mine because I don’t know if potty training falls under family or achievement. I think I know where to put the in-laws though….

    AND food.

really, Security is the only thing Cake compromises. When you’re holding a slice of cake, you are at risk of attack.
