The Youth(ish) of our Nation.

I took the government census data and downloaded it to excel. I was interested in the number of 25-35 year old people in each state of these United States as a percentage of the population of that state. Specifically, I wanted to see how Connecticut ranked. The results? Not very good for us Nutmeggers.

Take a look!

Here’s some info.

Minimum: MAINE 11.46%
Maximum: UTAH* 16.03%
Average: 13.22%
Standard Deviation: 1.03%

An interesting sampling:

Connecticut? 11.65%
Mass? 12.89%
Rhode Island? 12.39%
Oregon: 14.06%
Arizona: 14.58%
Texas: 14.78%
Washington: 14.00%
North Carolina: 13.78%
New York: 13.10%

*oh those mormans. They’re so crazy.

You could make some cool graphs out of this. Imagine if you could make like, a 3D histogram that was in the shape of the US, and each state was as tall as its respective precentage. Then you could have this crazy 3d topographic map of the youngness of each state. It would be even cooler to do the same thing, but break it down to the county level.

The 3d part will be easy. Getting the polygon coordinates for the states, on the other hand, might be tricky.

Dude, are the data by city too? Because I’ll bet Boston and Portland would both be muy grande. That’s because we’re hip.
