My sisters reading puts me to shame.

So I signed up for Goodreads awhile ago. I have 13 books that I’ve thrown up there and felt proud of my 13 books. Most of my goodread friends have between 2 and 30 so I felt decent about my modest pile o’ books. Most of them I’d read in the last year too… that’s better than one book a month! Awesome!

On Saturday my sisters Alicia and Theresa found the website, signed up, and promptly flushed my proud booklist down into the sewer.

Alicia has 99 books and Theresa has 43. ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY TWO BOOKS BETWEEN THEM.

Now, I’m a competitive individual and normally when my sisters show superiority I get motivated to compete with them. Sometimes it’s not too hard because they don’t know that we’re competing.* But not here friends. At my current rate of reading it will take me almost ELEVEN YEARS to read as many books as them. I spoke to Alicia… she goes through a stack of books from the library every TWO WEEKS. A STACK.

Out of my league.

Sigh.

*This isn’t pathetic, it’s strategy.

Update: A few other MikeDiDonato.com readers have Goodreads profiles. Jocelyn and Aaron both deserve a shoutout because they too have read a disgusting amount of books. Jocelyn has 95 and Aaron has 49. Seriously people. Good God.

I just signed up, and I’ve read a ridiculous amount of books. Most of them so far are Louis L’Amour. I could be all day at adding books. Mike, you’ve got to step it up.

To be fair, I had a long list of books I had to read in order to pass American Literature so I could graduate from high school. But I’ve read most of those books over again, and I only had to read one Louis L’Amour book to meet requirements. If it weren’t for that list, I might have missed out on so many books, so a big thank you goes to my Mom for that. Homeschooling can be fun.

May I recommend a retreat to your youth? If you start reading young adult fiction you can plow through books like nobody’s business. Have your read the Chronicles of Narnia? 7 books, you can finish them in less than a month, if not less. I read over half of them over Thanksgiving vacation.

Forget that 50+ club…I’m still adding books. So far I’m up to 116 books and still climbing! Oh and thanks for Narnia! Time to add those to the list!

EDIT! – 126, but I guess all my books are for fun reading, and not intellectual books. But when it comes to reading who cares what you read, as long as your reading. Am I right.

Darn. I’m only at 92. I wonder if I should add the Bobsey Twins books. If I include everything I read as a child, my list would never end.

What standards are we following for length? I feel like a Golden Book shouldn’t count for the same as, oh, Anna Karenina for example. Are people with 100+ books counting a short story as a book? I’ve read a lot of stuff that fits neatly between two covers and probably wouldn’t qualify. It will be interesting some day when all books have been scanned into the internet (ref. Google’s attempts to do so) and we can actually break our habits down by total characters, words, sentences, etc. – i.e. reading level. I’d be willing to bet “your” 50 books and “my” 50 books probably vary by quite a lot.

I just made a list two days ago (completely at random) of every book I can remember reading starting at around 5th grade, and I have around 55, which I thought would have been more… It’s strange to me that this post showed up 2 days later.

i just made a profile, and i don’t like the way it treats series as “1 book”. for example, i read The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide (6 books treated as 1), Four Complete Novels by Mark Twain (guess how many it was) and Lord of the Rings Trilogy. i feel i’m getting short changed with my “54”. should be “64” just by the above recalc, and i’m not sure that was everything

Ah, the far too overloaded term “book”. Obviously they are not using FRBR. While you are using “book” to mean a work, they are using “book” to mean a manifestation.

Whenever I’m daunted by the amount of reading somebody’s done beyond me, I just think to myself – I’ve probably eaten way more than them. Regardless of their age – even your sisters who are both older than me – I reckon I’ve eaten way more that I can even remember than they have in the entirety of both of their lives put together.

I got past this jesse, by not clicking any compilations. I’ve read several compilations, but ot till after the first print was read. So I have several trilogies on there with current compilations. I just read the books individually before they put them together to make more money.

I’m just awed by the number of books in existence. It’s amazing that someone can have read nearly a hundred books, and none of them are the same hundred or so that I’ve read.

I think as I get through an absurd amount of books I would be adding books to that list for years to catch up to the amount I have read so far in my life!

It seems there is less and less time for reading as life goes on. Everything gets so busy. I’d love to have scads of books to read all the time, but I doubt I’ll ever read as much as I already have.

I feel compelled to share a passage from the first chapter of the book I’m currently reading (If on a winter’s night a traveller by Italo Calvino). Seems appropriate. If you’re too impatient to read the whole passage, (somewhat long) at least hit up paragraph 8 which begins “In the shop window…” and read for a bit. The book is, well, different.

Knowing Kurt and Ryan at least more than most people on this website who’ve never met either of them, I’m 100% sure that Kurt is 10 times more boring an individual…at least.
I mean, just the other day I noticed somebody urinating on my house from a parasail above, covered in fireworks, simultaneously juggling chainsaws while dressed in a Power Ranger costume, his hair made entirely out of electrical tape.
    Schenk is CRAZY.
