Project Climb!

Pete and I have been approved for an independent research project at the University of New Haven!! This is EXTREMELY awesome because it means I could get my degree as early as May. The unfortunate side effect of this is that I’m going to probably lose more time each week due to… well… research and engineering. BUT we’re researching climbing gear, so it’s bound to be fun.

We’re going to be doing a finite element analysis on various types of climbing carabiners. We’ll compare brands, styles, and finally, the ACTUAL strengths versus those written on the side of the biners. we suspect that there will be some significant safety factors in there. We shall see!

So exciting!

In your research if you stumble across a very small, stainless or titanium autolock carabiner, PLEASE send me a link.

The single-stage carabiners used on kiteboarding leashes are DANGEROUS, and I have been looking for a small two-stage ‘biner that could be operated with one hand.
