Library

Mike D: Hi. I already have one book out. Can I take out two more? Is there a limit to the number of books I can take out on my card?

Librarian: You can take out as many as you want to feel responsible for.

Libraries are amazing.

I love the library. Do you have an online system? I get email reminders when my books are due and I can renew online. The free DVD rentals feels like cheating, you get them for 2 weeks and it’s free. Sure it’s not a huge selection, but FREE. I can also get museum passes and such if I reserve them in advance, you only get to keep those for a day, but once again, FREE.

I love that line “as many as you want to feel responsible for”. It makes it sound like each book is a child.

I wonder that you had to ask the question. You have been to a library before, right? I try not to take out more books than I can read in a month, cause it bothers me when people keep renewing instead of bringing back the book I want.

Libraries are definitely amazing. I think one of the first places I’ll go after I get my license is the library. So many books! :)

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever taken out more than two books at a time from a library. When I told my sister Theresa that I asked the question she was also confused. “don’t you remember when Mom used to take out stacks and stacks of books each month?” she asked

I guess there is a vague memory of this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there WAS a limit. I wonder what is the average amount of books removed from a library on any given day. I bet there are stats on this somewhere out there.

I think I might hit up the library again tonight. Pleasure reading isn’t something I normally have time for. But I enjoy it greatly.

I remember growing up for a child library card there was a 2-3 book limit. Same with the middle and high school library. It took me a few years to get used to the adult you can take out as many books as you want. It seems very crazy.

Not a huge selection? Try INTER LIBRARY LOAAAAAANNNN – I’m sure your library, wherever it is, is part of a larger network and from there (Through the online catalog) you should be able to request almost any title you can think of. When I lived in Worcester I had a hankering to watch mystery science theater 3000, and I was able to get it from a library in Amherst. It can take a little while depending on if it’s popular or not but it’s free.

the library in worcester had a limit of 40 books or periodicals out at a time, and 4 dvds or tapes.

I don’t think my current library on cape cod has any limits either, but the problem is that once you check out like 20 books and four dvds, if you forget to return them or to renew them, the fins add up really quickly – most libraries charge a dollar a day for late DVDs and $0.10 a day for books.

Also, one random thing I’ve learned lately is that unpaid library fines can hurt your credit score – so pay up!
