Injury!

I got an e-mail from Nicole, a double dutch participant. Check it out:

So I was driving back from Double Dutch 2007 and I get to just before the Worcester exits and I was thinking to myself… I feel kind of funny but I think I can make it… I’ll make up my mind by the time I reach the exit. So I’m just about at the exit and I still wasn’t sure when this drunk guy was driving circles around me, honking his horn and flashing his lights at me, trying to get me to race him so I said, decision made, I’ll stop in Worcester to at least wake up a bit.

So I get to Worcester and knock on a door… thats it… just knocked on a door of a friend who i knew was awake and had an extra bed he said i could use, and my hand feels really funny. I sat there nursing my wrist which feels strangely sore, and notice… WOAH! ITS GETTING HUGE! But I think I cant have done anything bad… I just knocked on a door and decide to sleep it off.

Well by 4 am i wanted to throw up from the pain and ended up in the hospital for x rays. I just sprained it and the official reason why was that “perhaps turning double dutch ropes caused a weird tendinitis and the added force of knocking made your wrist explode”

I’m now all splinted up for the week.

Yay first DD injury!

Apparently the doctors at the hospital did not believe that
a) there had been a double dutch party
b) we were all sober

With regards to a), yes! I am having such a hard time telling people about the double dutch party. No one seems to get that it was fun and not freakishly weird or anything and then we had tasty deserts!

Ahh, the old Double Dutch Exploding Wrist Syndrome. That’s nasty.

(I almost wrote “Technique” instead of Syndrome. That sounds like a kung-fu move – Double Dutch Exploding Wrist Technique.)

I don’t think Kung Fu students get to learn that until Red belt.

I really think that if I ever have to go to UMass Memorial again I’ll have inferior care because theres some mark on my permanent record. I think while I was there, every single nurse and doctor on duty came to my room in disbelief of the situation. I tried to explain that if I made up a story to cover up some drunken debauchery I would have said I hurt myself saving a young child from an oncoming car or something. Needless to say, I was the entertainment in the ER at 4 am.

Saving a young child from an oncoming car…

I like that. I’ll have to remember to use it.

Don’t worry Nicole. Not everyone can be as cool as you are. And those Doctors only know what they read in books. They don’t study Double Dutch Syndrome in med school. Hope your wrist is feeling better.
