Wow. I totally can’t finish this without help. Here’s my attempt:

    1. Rolling Stones
    2. Metallica
    3. hmm. Eric Clapton’s Layla?
    4. Led Zep.
    5. Elvis
    6. The Ramones? Are they British?
    7. not sure. Weezer Guster?
    8. hmmm… Tool?
    9. The Clash
    10. Jars of Clay
    11. Franz Ferdinand
    12. Sandstone (I admit it, I looked this one up)
    13. Kiss?
    14. uhh… phish? they aren’t exactly rock… I have no idea.
    15. Volcanic Rock
    16. Leonard Skinnard
    17. Progressive rock… uh… Lightning bolt? I got nothing.
    18. By definition, I think it’s impossible for me to know any Indie rock bands. Because as soon as anyone ‘not in the loop’ knows their names don’t indie fans stop liking them? My guess here would be the Pixies. But that might be way off.
    19. Slate (i cheated on this one too)
    20. Modern rock… hmm. not sure. Asprin Snacks?

Anyone want to provide a little help with the ones I missed?

For Pyschadellic Rock I would have to go with Pink Floyd myself, but that’s just me

I wouldn’t call Guster garage rock at all. Weezer, maybe, and that’s only because they have a song called “In the Garage.”

The big ones to me (at least in the modern garage rock revival) are The White Stripes and The Strokes. I’d throw Jet in there, too.

Perhaps Folk Rock as an additional category. An example of folk rock being Ani Defranco.

Would Emo Rock be considered a category (a la Death Cab for Cutie)?

And as part of my personal vendetta against all shitty rock, I would have another category called Fake Modern Mainstream Indie Rock. Example: the billion and one Interpol/The Clash/Franz Ferdinand hybrid clones out there.

Ben nails it, with the exception of Quartz as metamorphic. “Schist” or “Gneiss” would have been a better answer.

Gneiss, that’s such a good answer. I should have had that one.

My friend was president of the geology club at North Dakota State University. When they made T-shirts, he couldn’t decide between the slogans “Have a Gneiss Day” or “Schist Happens”.

    This is my geology story.

Alternative Rock (“Modern” is not a style, it’s like calling Electronic music techno)
    Blues Rock
    Rapcore
    Pop Rock
    Space Rock
Grunge (unless it’s the same as “garage”)
    Gothic Rock
    Acoustic Rock
    Chanson Rock
    Country Rock
    Latin Rock
Art Rock (i guess same as “progressive” here)

I don’t know what “Sedimentary Rock”, “Igneous Rock”, “Southern Rock” and “Metamorphic Rock” are and the bands mentioned for those.

“Indie” is not a style at all. Unless you want to get into metal, “Hair Metal Rock” should not be here, instead the bands in the category would go under “Heavy Metal” or “Hard Rock”.

Wow awesome list, Mike D! I have a few additions, too:

    Math Rock (ex: Slint)

Funk Rock (ex: I dunno, maybe Rick James)

    Funk Rock (ex: Stella)

    Surf Rock (ex: Dick Dale)

Post-Rock (ex: boring bands like Tortise)

    Noise Rock (ex: Hair Police)

    Pet Rock!!!

Unless you want to get into bad late-90’s ideas, “Rapcore” should not be here, instead the bands in the category would go under “Suck” or “Fred Durst”.

It doesn’t even have the word rock in it!

These can be vaguely catagorized under the umbrella heading “Underground Rock.”

    Explain.. And what’s “Fred Durst”?

I like rapcore bands such as Pleymo, Feverish and 3 Degres Est.

Fred Durst is the lead singer of Limp Bizkit. Personally, I’m not a huge fan. But to each his own.

I think it’s safe to say that Fred Durst is terrible, opinions be darned. But some “rap-rock” can be ok. Examples: Borealis, Zebrahead.
You forgot one: Opera-rock! Meat Loaf for LIFE.
