South America!

As I was listening to the news yesterday, and learning all about the Bolivia natural resource take-over, I realized… I don’t know exactly where Bolivia is. I know it’s in South America… but if you showed me a map, I bet there would only be a 40% chance of me correctly labeling Bolivia. SO! here it is. I present to you the South American Quiz.

Using the map below* name as many countries as you can without looking them up. Once all answers are had, highlight the answers that I’ve written in tricky white text in the area labled ‘ANSWER BOX’ below. Report your score in the comments section. If you correctly identify Bolivia, give yourself a bonus point.

I was going to go in and edit your results so that you didn’t reveal any answers to the other players… But since you only got three right… I figure we might as well leave your results up to amuse the masses.

That really is hilarious Alicia, though I don’t think I would have done much better. It’ll be interesting to see what the mike d reader class average is.

Score is 9. Could be worse. Could be a LOT better.

I’m not even going to try this, anything I got right would be pure chance. Interesting side note though, my Mom lived in Uruguay for 2 years and learned fluent spanish while there, very cool.

I’ll see if I can do the capitals, since I’ll get 14 of 14 countries. (Side note: it’s interesting that you include #14, as it’s kinda owned by the UK, but yet claimed by Argentina. It’s a sticky issue. There was a war about it 20 years ago. Because of this there’s a big soccer rivalry between these two countries.)

    #1) Brasilia
    #2) ?
    #3) ?
    #4) Georgetown
    #5) Caracas
    #6) Bogota
    #7) Quito
    #8) Lima
#9) La Paz (political) and Sucre (judicial)
    #10) Santiago
    #11) Buenos Aires
    #12) Montevideo
    #13) Asuncion
#14) ? (Does this even have a capital?)

I think you have an unfair advantage since you were born in latin america. If you didnt know where stuff was we’d have to disown you.

I have a passion for maps. Ever since I was little, I’ve had nation and world maps hanging on my walls. I have six framed maps hanging in my apartment right now. (And five more above me here at work).

Oh, and even my primary sport/hobby/activity has to do with maps! For SAT purposes, think (Mike D :: Rock Climbing is to Patrick :: Orienteering).

I love maps so much that my co-workers say that “maps are my porn”.

I should have been a cartographer… instead, I’m an engineer.

(All of that said, I’d do a lot worse with a map of Africa or all of the Caribbean/Pacific Islands. I’m horrible with those.)

Can you name what the Argentines call the Falkland Islands? (I can’t but I know they have a different name for them)

Oh, and according to Wikipedia, they do have a capital (they are a “self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom”), AND I guessed it correctly :)

    I disagree with this logic.

Americans don’t know where half of their states are.

Granted, I don’t even remember the names of the venezuelan states but chavez probably changed them all to Bolivar 1, Bolivar 2, Bolivar 3, and so on.

Don’t even try and ask me to name all the UK counties, let alone name them on a map…
