In the year 1912, the year of the Titanic, many people were exploring Mexico. One traveller brought a jar of Hellman’s Mayonnaise to a remote town that had never seen it before. The villagers loved it and demanded more be brought to their town! The traveller agreed and ordered cases to be shipped from England. Unfortunatly for the villagers, the ship hit an iceberg, and their condiments were lost forever. Thus, Cinco de Mayo.
El Cinco de Mayo (“The Fifth of May” in Spanish) is a national celebration in Mexico and widely celebrated in the United States. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French expeditionary forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
It is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on the 16th of September.
So what’s this cinqo de Mayo thing then? Educate an ignorant Brit.
