CLOWNS

The contest:
Using MSPaint, draw a gigantic evil clown attacking either a single dinosaur or a colony of dinosaurs.

Once again, some of the drawings are large. so if you’re using IE you may have to wait until the picture loads, then hold your mouse over the picture until the ‘expand’ button appears in the lower right. Click on that to view the picture in the proper resolution.

Entries (with brief commentary):

Clown 1
Action packed! I don’t know how those dinosaurs got lightsabers, but they have them, and I’m scared. I think I’m rooting for the clown.

Clown 2
The square type drawing style is very captivating. There is no better poem that could have been picked. Also: good weapon.

Clown 3
I love the cartoon feeling to this MSPainting. Despite the horror that those dinosaurs must be experiencing, I can’t help but smile.

Clown 4
How could you not love the fact that the dinosaur on the right is hiding under a book. I also appreciate the clown’s weaponry.

Clown 5
The comic strip type style helps accentuate the underlying themes of loneliness and depression.

Clown 6
It’s a public service announcement and a giant evil clown all in one! Please make sure to read the sign by the volcano.

Clown 7
Excellent intepretation of a clown attacking a ‘single’ dinosaur. Clever and cute.

Clown 8
Think Michael Jackson’s “Bad” Video

Clown 9
Creepy and dark. But you can’t deny the artistic quality. I like the lightning knife.

Clown 10
It’s like theater of the absurd… except in MSPainting form. Funny, but it makes you think.

Clown 11
Ahh, while many people incorporated one of the McDonalds characters… this is the only one that includes Two. Excellent.

Clown 12
Interesting choice of a weapon, and very artistically drawn

Clown 13
I think everyone would agree that blood and gore is awesome.

Clown 14
This clown has clearly been trained in martial arts. It is an excellent use of pie.

Clown 15
I like the Dr. Katz sort of profile of the scary obese clown. Also the black and white is a pleasant break from the color norms.

Clown 16
That’s no tree young clown. These dinosaurs… they’re smart.

Clown 17
HOLY ANIMATION! Those dinosaurs kind of look like Teddy Grahams. I think that’s awesome.

Clown 18
The text is very deep. It instills a sense of fear and at the same time a deep sense of irony.

Please vote for your favorite three (in order of awesomeness) in the comments. You’re not allowed to vote for your own and you are encouraged to leave descriptions of why you chose the MSPaint picture that you did. While you’re at it, guess which is mine.

A few people requested a recap, so here it is. click on any of the pictures to bring up the big version.

Holy smokes! Who are these people and where were they in the last contest? Everyone has really kicked it up a notch.
I’d like to clarify, are we voting for 1st, 2nd and 3rd againt; with different points to be assigned to each?
    Holy Smoke!

Yes, please vote for your first, second, and third choices. 3 points will be awarded for your first choice, 2 for your second, and 1 for your third. You are not allowed to vote for your own. If you specifically say that your choices are in no particular order, I will award each vote 2 points. If you only vote for one MSPainting, I will award that picture 2 points. I’ll keep a tally of the votes and post the results on Sunday. POLLS CLOSE SUNDAY AT NOON.

Ha, I am amazed at people’s mspaint abilities. In fact, I don’t even know whose is Mike’s. Mike, did you have any entries from people you didn’t know at all?

My favorite is #2. The poem, the squareness… it’s all awesome. It’s like a mspaint needlepoint.
Next, #6, because it’s so out
Finally, #3. I just liked it.

I’m not voting for number 9, because it’s too good. I don’t think it’s a true mspaint drawing. There, I said it.

Clown 5 was by far my favorite. It’s just awesome on so many levels!

Clown 7 is a close runner up, because it’s adorable. I love the curled tails underneath the table.

Clown 1 gets third. I like this one because it looks like, after the fighting, the clown will be flashing us from under his trenchcoat.

    And I’m 67.2% sure that MikeD’s is Clown 8.

I’m 95% sure that mike’s is #14. the composition, the strokes, the speed lines…
and most importantly, the speed in which it was done.

It seems to me that there’s a lot of repressed anger at one “ronald mcdonald”

now, while i expected such things from kurt since he had to work in his salt mines, i didn’t know that this was a widespread thing.

    My votes:
#7 Single dinosaurs are funny… singles night is a visible success for most of the attendees… she asks herself, why did she end up with the clown? Is this Jill’s entry?

#3 Giant clown… pie in one hand, dino in the other… the colors just pop off the page. Its like i’m there.

#5 The composition, the colors… but there’s a hint of cut and paste visible… those dinos are just too perfect everytime. i don’t know what the contest policy is but I award only one point.

and special mention of #4, dramatic reimagining of what a dinosaur can be!

Marian – you aren’t the only one with zero votes. Maybe we should form a club.

    My votes go as follows:

#6: Number six, if you looked quickly, appears cheerful and happy. The evil horror only appears after closer examination. Also, the PSA and volcano sign appeal to me.

#4: Number 4 is awesome, because the fight is SO uneven. It’s truly a slaughter – the dinosaurs have caveman-era weapons, where the clown (who has just destroyed an entire village) is ridiculously over-armed.

#18: Anyone who tattoos “DIE” on their tongue will get my vote out of sheer intimidation factor. Also, that clown is HUGE. Like, world-sized. Like, Eater-of-World’s size.

Ah, let me be an art critic….

#1) There’s a lot about this one to like, such as the pack of saber-wielding raptors back there. But for me, the clown’s teeth are just too freaky, and I know it’s supposed to be a Jedi robe, but I agree that he looks like he’s going to streak any minute now…

#2) This one doesn’t do it for me. The method is very creative, but I don’t get the poem. Why go to all of the trouble to create the art… and then borrow someone else’s words?

#3) This is easily my favorite of the bunch. I especially love the contrast of colors. There’s the lovely bright t-rex up front, and the muted colors of the eruption in the background (an overlooked feature here is the quality of that volcano). And the clown, oh my! Being a Kansan, I might be the only one to pick up on this, but check out the similarities between this MS Paint creation and a famous painting that hangs in the Kansas Capitol: http://www.kshs.org/places/capitol/graphics/capitol_mural.jpg

#4) This is one is just too disturbing, especially the clown whose pants are falling down. And the cute little dinosaurs! It’s too reminiscent of Michael Jackson and little boys.

#5) Clearly the most thought-out, and it’s worthy of a top-3 finish for sure. I’m a big fan of the play-on wittiness of having the dinosaurs as vitamins. This one has a definite realism to it. This could actually happen in real-life… today! Great job.

#6) Yeah… I’m not ordering chicken nuggets today. Are you? Creepy.

#7) I like this one. I like the twirled tails under the table. Because that’s where I wish I was during a singles nite. This one is a little too chick-flickish for my tastes. Where’s the gigantic evil clown? It’s just a dinosaur with a wig, juggling. That’s not evil, that’s endearing.

#8) This is the only image to conjure up a soundtrack in my head. I love where this one is going… I just wish I could see where this image would end up 2 minutes later!

#9) Whoa, it’s a Friday afternoon! I need some happy! This one scares me. If this were in my closet, I’d scream. The artist has talent, though.

#10) and #11) Along with #6… I’m just not digging the Ronald McDonaldness. He’s really not that evil is he?

#12) The simplicity, wittiness (an ‘evel’ clown and ant-colony-esque dinosaurs), and color-scheme are straight out of the pop art movement, no?

#13) Truth be told, blood and teeth scare me. This one is the most ironic. A clown attacking a dinosaur as if their roles were reversed.

#14) I LOL’ed at the pine tree beat down. But compared to all of the other dinosaur beatdowns, this quartet is just too routine.

#15) This would definitely win if everyone were given a 2-color and 5-minute limit. I know I couldn’t do that. But, in this league of competition, no vote.

#16) A destitute Raggedy Andy vs. Barney. And that’s not a tree!

#17) Subtlety is not this artist’s strong suit. But kudo points for making an animated .GIF….. But isn’t that illegal… MS paint can’t do that, right?

#18) I’m speechless. Can you imagine if your kindergartener drew something like this and you were summoned to the school about it. Oh my!

So, my votes are in this order: #3, #5, #7

I have to start off with the fact that clowns scare the crap out of me. Seriously. I’d run into a dark alley with creepy homeless people, if it meant i didn’t have to be near a clown. Ever since I watched Stephen King’s IT when i was seven…*shudder*…

Aaaaanyway, I attempted a drawing, but my clown was terrible and then i broke it and didnt want to draw it all over again.

so the order of my votes is #9, #3, #2.

#9 – I’m slightly creeped out, but not terrified of this clown. Nothing like a sad, depressed, knife-welding clown to put my mind at ease regarding a childhood fear. The drawing itself is ridiculously well done.

#3 – I believe this is Jon Abad’s, although i wouldn’t put lots of money on that. I like the cartoony-ness and the t-rex running in fear in the foreground.

#2 – I really love the artistic style. I’m amazed by non-traditional techniques, mainly because I’m never that creative.

#8… right after this, about 20 other dinosaurs come out, they breakdance, and the three evil clowns walk away. Because, clearly, they ain’t bad. They ain’t nothin!

Seriously, someone go watch the video.

    #6, #7, #14.

Six because it’s cute, and I like the different dinos. Seven because it’s clever.
Fourteen because its style is simple yet classic.

As for #15, Patrick, you are indeed right that it was done in maybe 4 to 5 minutes. My patience ran out when trying to color it because the colors kept bleeding everywhere, most likely due to poor edge closure. It is a first MSpaint for me and I hope with time to become a contender, though I may not be quite as warped as some of the competitors and thus may be a tad more boring in my interpretations.

Wow. This has been so hard to choose which one is the best; every single one is awesome. The most difficult thing for me was choosing between ones that were funny and bizarre, and ones that were artistically and aesthetically superior. With that said…

#5: Holy crap, this one is cool. This one was probably the only easy #1 choice for me. Totally different, full of detail, hilarious and sad at the same time, well drawn… it had it all. I don’t know if the flinstones on the vitamin bottle were copy pasted (I would give it 2nd place if it was), but the artist deserves to get the benefit of the doubt because the rest of the drawing is brilliant.

#9: This one just scares me. Not so much what it is, but how unbelievable well drawn it is. The shadows and colors are excellent.

#13: Very simple, but probably the funniest in a subtle kind of way. It’s not the kind of drawing that would make me laugh right away, but the more I look at it, the more mesmerized I find myself by the clown’s expression. I can just picture him saying “YEAH!” in his most rock and roll victorious voice.

The runner’s up; these were the ones that made it hard to not give them a vote.

#14: Like 5, it’s clever, unique, it’s action packed, and very funny. If Bruce Lee were a clown, this is what would happen.

#1: Oh my EFF! Dinosaurs and lightsabers. Sheer beautiful poetry.

#12: Very artistic. I love the dinosaur ants. Science taught me that dinosaurs live in little holes in the ground. It’s all part of Intelligent Design.

    In no particular Order:

8 – It took me a couple viewing to put two and two together on this one. Wonderfully creative.
9 – This is unbeliavably artistic and creative in it individual elements. Both the clown and the t-rex are beatifully drawn, but I find the clown’s posture and costume to be wonderfully unique elements. The dinosaur seems a litte too passive about life.
7 – So goofy, so wonderful. Between the look on the face of teh dino-clown, to the creative twist on “single dinosaur,” this entire composition represents a small stroke of comedic enlightenment.

Can I also make a suggestion that in future contests, we vote for artistic style and creativity? Every drawing here has at least one element to appreciate, and although not everyone is artisticly talented, I would love to be able to award a winner for creative uses of the theme to form a concept.

    2. Evie (whoever you are), amazing point about the Christmas tree, way to go Mike D.
    3. I forgot all about number 2. Please make #2 my #2 choice, leaving #5 out of my top 3 completely. How’d they do that with the squares!!!??? I think Photoshop might have some function like this, maybe defining your own pattern or something, I’m not entirely sure. But MSPaint rule conformity or not, it’s brilliant, only overtaken by #4 due to the insanely cute dinos contrasted with the insanely evil clown, it really tugs on my heartstrings.
