runnin.

last night I went running with Mark. I think it’s the first time since late may or june. I felt great! no knee worries, and we kept up a solid pace for most of the trip.

In other news, Sander (sizzle) and Jesse did some more work on the rock wall. The Sizz posted a few pictures below. We still need to touch up a few spots and put in a more impressive padding system. But overall, it’s a good setup.

Today my goal is to drink a 4.5 quarts of water before 5pm.

Didja know you can become intoxicated from drinking too much water? Kurt, Godlewski, and I did it one time.

No we had a challenge amongst our selves. Drink all the water in the Watercool outside SGA’s office in 5 minutes.
I was seriously drunk. I think I drank 2 gallons in 5 minutes. My stomach hurt, I was lightheaded, and about 20 minutes later in the SocComm exec meeting I had to go to the bathroom. I couldn’t stand up cause my internal organs were the only thing keeping my bladder closed. So I rolled into the bathroom got all set to go, stood up and I did my best impression of Niagara Falls. It was an experience.
I guess what happened was we completely flushed all the sodium out of our body, which is bad because there is a sodium ion-pump that regulates your heart beat. So i guess we were really close to passing out. Or so I heard.

interesting. My freshman year we convinced a guy, tall Ed, to drink a gallon of water in 20 minutes. He did it, but then threw up. I’ve been interested in the limits of water consumption ever since that fateful day.

Did you succeed in draining the water cooler in 5 minutes?

We did not do it in 5 minutes, we did do it though. It hurt, and we were giddy and giggly through the whole meeting, which i had to leave every 10 minutes to miterate.

Yeah, it became a ritual. Every Thursday.
Thirsty Thursday at 4pm we took up the challenge to drain whatever water was left in the water cooler in 15 minutes or less. I think we did it every time, unfortunately, there were no other times we drank an entire bottle that quickly.

Kurt is right about too much water and the heartbeat. A couple of years ago a young woman, an experienced but not “professional” marathoner, drank lots of plain water during the run (Boston Marathon) and shortly before the finish collapsed and died. Not sure, but I think it had to do with the water removing potassium from the body, which caused the heart to have major (obviously, the poor girl died) problems. Interestingly enough, her PhD thesis had to do with marathons in some way –
So, dear Mike, perhaps you should read up on what exactly you may be doing to yourself –

    Mike,
You actually very much should read up on the limit of water intake. There are many more deaths per year from OVER-hydration than dehydration, especially if you work out a lot. I’ve heard stories of marathon runners dying from drinking too much during the race. The article linked below mentions that healthy people aren’t usually at risk, but quotes “more than 2 gallons a day” as enough to be a problem. The syptoms are not usually death though, which is rare. They are commonly: behavioral changes, confusion, drowsiness, being inattentive, shouting and delerium, blurred vision, muscle cramps, twitching, paralysis on one side of the body, poor coordination, nausea or vomiting, rapid breathing, SUDDEN WEIGHT GAIN (uh oh fatty), explosive diarrhea, the condition known as “hot-dog-finger”, gigantic eyeball, possession by the Prince of Darkness, an odd propensity for singing Journey songs, and extreme lack of sexual prowess… it only gets worse from there. As your friend I must speak up because you might have a drinking problem. Contact your sponsor. You need to dry out.
