Burrrrn

My boss and the head of accounting quietly make fun of my sideburns as I sit working diligently in front of them.

mike d: “you know, I’m surprised Pam was the one that quit.”
Boss: “I always knew she was the smarter one.”

    this makes no sense.

were you not able to hear what boss and head of accounting were talking about?

why did you bring up pam quitting?

    this story needs more detail!

Yeah, if you are talking about that sort of thing in front of authority figures, either:

    a) Your boss is not a manager but a comrade in the battles of work who happens to outrank you,
    b) You aren’t the brightest,
    c) What does that comment have to do with your sideburns? Do they make you smart/stupid/hot/not?

Sigh. I was hoping the quote would speak for itself. I’ll explain:

My saying “I’m surprised Pam was the one who quit” in response to their making fun of my appearance was a reference to the fact that I take an unusual amount of mocked criticism while at work. So much so that I was declaring it a miracle that I still have any desire to work for the company. Referencing Pam’s quitting first was a way for me to get this idea across in a subtle manner.

However, my boss turned it around quite skillfully. His comment “I always knew she was the smarter one” was a triple insult. First he flat out says that I’m not as smart. By correlating that with quitting, he suggests that my job is crap. And also, by immediately following my “you guys make fun of me too much” complaint with Yet another insult, he belittles my plea for them to stop. One of these days I’m going to snap. It’ll be a dark day for Thermatool.

The boss was Larry. But don’t worry Pam, it was a joke.

Maybe the people who didn’t get it don’t get made fun of very often….

    Unfortunately, I got it immediately

    Hmm… that might be true…

in my isolation in the lone star state, i don’t get much mockery other than through email.
