A new name?

Yesterday, Roller Girl JK Elemenopee congratulated me on the announcer gig and asked me if I had come up with a derby name yet. Admittedly, no, I hadn’t really thought about it much.

Naturally, I’m looking for ideas. If you have an idea or recommendation for my roller derby announcer name leave it in the comments!

Big News!

Attention good readers! I just received word that I have been victorious in my quest towards roller derby announcer-dom!!

I am extremely excited. Thanks to everyone who voted and cheered me on!!

In other Derby news, I’m way behind with my recap. It’ll probably go up either tomorrow or Saturday. My apologies to the Roller Girls for the delay.

Prep for the big game.

Last night I had an opportunity to swing by a roller derby practice to make sure that I’ve got the rules and players straight in preparation for tomorrow’s announcer showdown. All three of the Roller Derby Announcer candidates were invited, though only two of us showed up: Myself, and Sean Fowler.

I gotta say, Sean is going to be an extremely tough rival. He’s got experience as a karaoke host, and has even done some auditions for voice work in infomercials. On top of that he’s a seasoned skydiver and fire breather, and I read on his website that he’s done capoeira. I read all this as: prime roller derby announcer material. He has a quick wit and a deep radio-like voice. It will be tough.

He and I got along pretty well, he’s a cool guy and really nice. Quite frankly, if I can’t win I won’t be disappointed if he takes the victory. Though I think both of us are hoping that the Roller Girls consider the potential of two announcers.

If you’d like to join the party tomorrow, head over to the Connecticut Sports Center in Woodbridge. The bout starts at 7, doors open at 6. I hope to see you there!

The Details on the Contest

Thanks again to all those who voted for me in the Roller Derby Announcer Competition. I received a phone call yesterday informing me that I was one of the finalists. I promptly celebrated with a bonus cup of coffee, some high fives amongst the work colleagues, and a cookie. If that isn’t a raucous celebration, I don’t know what is.

Each of the three finalists (I’m not sure who the other two are) will have an opportunity to crash Thursday’s roller derby practice to learn more specifics about the game. Then, come Saturday’s bout, we’ll each act as announcer for two jams. At one-two minutes each, a two jam tally only provides a few minutes to wow the crowd with announcing bravado.

I’m really excited! Regardless of the outcome, I hope I represent myself well in the spotlight. In the grand scheme of things, I am considering this training for that day when I will become a rockstar.

Once the announcing is complete, I’m not sure if the final decision will be put up to public vote, or decided behind the curtain. Nor am I certain when the announcement will be made. I anticipate that we’ll know no later than early next week.

I’m pretty stoked to have made it this far. If you’re interested in coming to the roller derby bout this Saturday, you should! Doors open at 6pm at the Connecticut Sports Center.
