Halloween 2007!

September 28th, 2007 by mike d.

October is well on the way so I suppose it’s about time for a Halloween MSPaint event.

Last year’s event, complete with over 30 entries, was a big hit. This year I thought I’d continue along the same lines as before with a ‘make a costume for mike d’ contest.

But this time with a bit more flare.

I’ve created an MSPaint body template.
halloween2.PNG

Included in this template are a series of eyes, mouths, heads, skin tones, and bodies to allow you all sorts of flexibility in making your best costume for me.

For starters, click on the thumbnail above and save the image to your computer.

Next, get this final template. This will standardize entries and help with sizing etc.
halloween2a.PNG

Open up two MSPaint windows and copy the body components from one MSPaint into the canvas of the final MSPaint template. Then, add some accessories and some color to make the ultimate costume!! Finally, add a title and e-mail it to me! (MikeDiDonato AT gmail D0T com)

Really, anything is allowed, but if you’re looking for a theme I’ll start you off with SuperHereos and Supervillains.

MSPaint tip:

When you’re pasting each component into the final template, make sure you have this highlighted in the toolbar:
mspainttip.PNG

It’ll help a lot.

Here’s a quick one that I came up with just now. Dr. Hurt. Dr. Hurt’s shield has the chemical composition of cocaine engraved into its face. He’s intense.

If you have a hard time getting the files or manipulating MSPaint send me a quick e-mail and I’ll help you any way I can.

Halloween MSPaints will appear in the ‘quickthoughts’ section for as much of October as I can provide.

(side note: if you feel restricted… feel free to make your own ‘bodies’ or features. there’s no rule saying you have to use only what’s provided)

Good luck!!

T-Shirt Design Contest

March 16th, 2007 by mike d.

As many of you know, my father plays sax for a band called Tabasco Fiasco.

He wants to silk screen some t-shirts for the band, and is looking to you for awesome ideas.

The band consists of 5 members: Two horns, a bass, set, and guitar. They play a bunch of local gigs in Massachusetts, with a focus on the classic rock genre.

SO. your task… if you choose to accept it, is to design an image to be silk screened onto t-shirts. Feel free to come up with a logo or slogan if you’d like. Typically the band has been represented by a chili pepper, but I’m sure that they’d be willing to explore other ideas if you have them.

The best design, as chosen by my dad, will be plastered onto the t-shirts of the band and the designer will get a free t-shirt for themselves.

This may be the first MikeDiDonato.com art contest where MSPaint isn’t required. All I ask is that you try and restrict your color usage to no more than three colors. example: Black, red, green.

My Dad!

E-mail your entries to me at MikeDiDonato AT gmail D0T com. The deadline is tentatively Saturday March 24th at midnight.

Halloweeeen 1

We’ve received the first entry to this week’s Halloween MSPaint Marathon.

This artist was inspired by the flip like characteristics of my hair and came up with:

The Tasty Halloween Costume.

MSPAINT CONTEST

October 13th, 2006 by mike d.

So here we are. It’s finally fall. And Halloween approaches.

This year I thought I’d try something a bit fun. I have created a templet drawing of myself located HERE.

Go to that picture and copy it into MSPaint on your computer and then color me in and give the mike d on the right a Halloween costume. It can be as elaborate or as simple as you desire. You can also submit multiple entries if you’d like. Please type the name of your costume in the lower right so that we will be able to identify your creation.

Here’s an example: Business Partner Alien Mike D.

I’ll post the pictures throughout the next two weeks as they come in. This one’s going to be less of a contest and more of a “let’s have a good time” sort of thing. So go nuts.

The only rule is to keep it MSPaint real.

Return to Cookie Mountain

September 29th, 2006 by mike d.

Low turnout this week. We had a simple three entries. The lack of entries, however, does not make them any less entertaining!

The contest was such: Using only MSPaint, draw a new album cover for the disc “RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN” by the band TV on the RADIO because the current album art, while ‘okay’, can’t keep up with the sweet album title.

Cookie Mountain 1: This artist used some shading and some female dominance to literally portray a return to a cookie mountain. I like the redhead and the cookie shading. Well done artist one!

Cookie Mountain 2: Artist two also used shading. This particular mountain clearly has cookie boulders. They may seem harmless and tasty from afar, but up close… deadly. I like the beams of light in this entry. Great job artist two!

Cookie Mountain 3: Artist three made the clever connection to Brokeback Mountain. I find this one hilairous. not only because its a parody, but also because it really is difficult to quit cookies. Very well done Artist three!

Thanks to the three participants! Next week’s challenge will be a bit less complicated!!

Please vote for your favorite in the comments.
Remember, artists can not vote for their own entry! Good luck!

UPDATE: we have a FOURTH contestant!

Cookie Mountain 4: Artist four also went for the literal route of ‘a mountain made of cookies’. However, if you do some research you’ll find that there are claims that the name “oreo” came from a mountain. Hydrox, on the other hand, came up with their name from combining basic elements. Hydrogen and Oxygen. This naming nomenclature failed miserably, which is why Nabisco is #1. Very clever artist number four!

MSPaint Contest

September 22nd, 2006 by mike d.

So the band TV on the RADIO just came out with an album called “RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN”

This is the album cover:

TV on the Radio

A birdsnest? LAME.

This week’s contest is for you to design a better album cover. The name is amazing… but the art is terrible.

For extra credit, include some sort of visual credit to the song title: snakes and martyrs

THE RULES:
All art must be done soley in MSPaint (or mac equivilent). All entries must be e-mailed to me by Thursday September 28th at 5:00pm EST. My e-mail addy is: MIKEDIDONATO AT GMAIL DOT COM

You can use the internet to research ideas, but please do not copy and paste from anyone elses drawings. We want the art to be mikedidonato.com originals.

Good luck team!

MSPaint Contest!!

August 24th, 2006 by mike d.

Who doesn’t love MSPaint?

I really don’t know.

This week’s contest is a brutal one. The challenge was to draw your best representation of the phrase REVENGE OF THE TREES using only MSPaint. And draw you did. We have over ten entries, check it out.

NOTE: some of these drawings are large, if it opens to full screen just click the drawing again to return to this screen.

TREE 1: An instant classic! These trees are clearly on a path of destruction.
mike d’s fav. part: the color of the clouds

TREE 2: Ahh Britney Gallivan! how we love you here at MIKEDIDONATO.com, while normally we disqualify entries with copy and pastage… I think this deserves a pass. (if you ARE Britney Gallivan, click here)
mike d’s fav. part: the tree’s face. very cartoony, I like it.

TREE 3: Hilarious! I love this!
mike d’s fav. part: This is just insanely clever. A+

TREE 4: Colorful, fun, a work of art no doubt.
mike d’s fav. part: This tree, of all those submitted, has the best leaves in my humble opinion.

TREE 5: The artist of this piece entitled it “Devil in Eden.” The devil is intended to be possessing the tree called “The Forbidden”
mike d’s fav. part: The devil is ellusive. This one takes a minute to figure out, I find this mysterious.

TREE 6: This is by far the most unique of the entries. It appears to be a female tree of doom, on a quest to kill.
mike d’s fav. part: Actually, my fav part of this entry is the funky dog on the right.

TREE 7: This artist gave a quick description of her drawing, I quote:

the reason the trees want revenge is because they are being overharvested and sprayed with chemicals. So they call a meeting and decide to drop all fruit (so that there is none to eat). Obviously some females can adapt to a junk food diet and these are the ones who are paid to keep the species alive. The desired result being a stabilised population where everyone eats a non-fruit diet.

also the cherry on the cupcake is intended to be a Mangel-wurzel. (A vegetable in taste, very similar to very sweet, red beets; in shape, greatly resembling carrots) This was used in the war-time to make fake cherries.

mike d’s fav. part: the round table of trees and the main tree’s face and color.

TREE 8: Oh man. We love the cupcake purple dude. We really do.
mike d’s fav. part: it’s obvious. The purple dude.

TREE 9: These trees have no mercy. None.
mike d’s fav. part: The bulldozer!

TREE 10: Please note: these trees are using Chainsaws. And their facial features are near-perfect.
mike d’s fav. part: The tree on the left. It’s great!

TREE 11: Whoa, impressive shading. I like the color choice and the funky leaf method
mike d’s fav. part: the ground shading

TREE 12: CUPCAKE ARMEGEDDON 2 - REVENGE OF THE TREES
mike d’s fav. part: RAWRG!

TREE 13: Brilliant! I tried forever to think of a way to get “revenge of the sith” into my drawing idea… but came up with nothing. Special props to this artist for achieving this.
mike d’s favorite part: The tree’s blood is clorophyl.

So there we have it. 13 entries.

Please use the comments to vote for….
1) your personal favorite
2) the most artistic
3) the most hilarious

and a bonus point for the most inane.

YOU CANNOT VOTE FOR YOUR OWN! If you don’t feel comfortable voting publically, you can vote anonymously, however the e-mail must be legit. Otherwise I will revoke the vote, and publically humiliate the poster.

Need a review? Here are the entry thumbnails in order 1-13. click on the small verson for the big version.

TREES 1,2,3 LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE
TREES 4,5,6 LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE
TREES 7,8,9 LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE
TREES 10,11 LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE
TREES 12,13 LITTLE TREE LITTLE TREE

Once again, 1) personal fav. 2) most artistic 3) most hilarious
and a bonus point for the most inane.

Please feel free to write commentary on why you chose the drawings you did. votes will be tallied next Thursday, Aug 30th.

MSPaint Contest #12!

August 18th, 2006 by mike d.

Welcome back to Mike D’s MSPaint contests!

We last left off with the Robot at a Playground contest. The winner was Robot 3!!

For those keeping score, Patrick had it right on the money. Robot 3 was done by me. Robot 1 by Patrick, 2 by Sander, and 4 by Roland. Check out the Robot at a Playground contest here.

So it’s been awhile… about three months in fact. During that time I had been trying to come up with the best idea to bring the game back in full fury. I was having a hard time… there are only so many “Jaguar’s stuffing typewriters into microwaves” that a guy can come up with before his idea bank runs dry. So I spoke to a few people yesterday and this morning… and it was Aaron that came up with this stellar idea:

Revenge of the Trees

Here are the rules.

Using ONLY MSPaint (or a mac equivilent) draw a picture that you feel best depicts the phrase “Revenge of the Trees!” All drawings must be submitted to me by next Wednesday at noon EST! If this deadline is to be extended, it will be extended before Tuesday. I have to keep this contest short because of my pending trip to China.

Feel free to use the internet to research the topic, but do not steal or copy anything from anyone else’s art. Your MSPaint drawing must be entirely your own. Also, I would recommend that you keep your drawings relatively small, otherwise drawing deformation may occur when people try to view the drawing in Internet Explorer.

E-mail your entry to mikedidonato AT gmail DOT com

I’m expecting some new participants in this challenge, so get started early and rock that MSPaint.
Good luck!!
