Czechia?

July 14th, 2008 by Patrick in Quickthoughts

Why do we call it the Czech Republic? Every other country* out there just goes by its name without any other word after it. It seems like the Czechs have it too formal…

Exceptions: Democratic Republic of the Congo (not to be confused with the Congo– two different countries), Central African Republic, which I suppose could go by just Central Africa, and Domincan Republic (not to be confused with Dominica– two different countries).

There a lot of countries (especially ones that have undergone political revolution in the past century) have wordy names… The Federal Republic of Germany, Republic of Belarus, the Hellenic Republic (Greece).

And, for what it’s worth, a lot of people just call the Czech Republic “Czech”. My wife’s former inlaws were from Czech, and this was the term they used.

But in the media, or referring to sports teams or olympics or whatever, they never call it The Federal Republic of Germany. It’s always “Germany”. However, whenever you hear about the Czech Republic in the news, it’s always “Czech Republic”.

I usually just call it Czechoslovakia, because that’s more fun to say.
