Worried Mornings turn into Days, then into Worried Nights.

April 15th, 2008 by mike d. in A Day In The Life...

Last night I woke up at 3am… totally freaking out about work and a few personal things. It was enough to keep me paranoid and wide awake. At one point, I gave up… did some tax error checking and some laundry. After two hours of mild freaking out, I managed to fall back to sleep.

This morning, after breakfast and a trip to starbucks… all those concerns seem pretty mild. Certainly nothing to get crazy about.

How is it that night amplifies worries?

It’s like my emotions are the PRS and night is a hot 350W Marshall Mode Four stack plugged in and ready to melt your face off with volume.

I know what you mean about night amplifying worries. Some nights I get myself so worked up over something that I have to get up and do something to take my mind off of it. I once cleaned the bathroom at 2am just so I could distract myself enough to get back to sleep.

Yes! I often find myself getting up to clean in order to help get my mind off things. I bet homes across America are cleaner because of this phenomenon.

Night does not amplify worries, it quiets everything else…

My theory is that it actually amplifies concerns.

Fun fact: The chemical profiles of our brains change depending on what’s going on in our lives. I read an article awhile back… check it here … that talks about how our brains actually respond in a similar fashion to people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder when we fall in love.

I get that same obsessive compulsive feeling late at night when I wake up paranoid. I wonder if our brain’s chemical profiles might also change with night so that we become obsessed with our worries? This is a shot in the dark (har har) and I have no research supporting it, but I like the idea.

Mmm, excellent usage of “face melting”
