Cyrillic

Posted by mike d. Filed in ExtremeWeb

Friend Jess is headed to Ukraine to spread some SERIOUS peace. I’m hoping I’ll be able to take a Business trip over there during her stay so I can

a) be witness to amazing things like Chernobyl.
b) have close travels to neighboring countries like Turkey

Jess has been studying Cyrillic. Yesterday she shared this gem with me:

я буды оригиналом искусство. задняя

Literally, it translates to:
“I will be the martial original skill. Don’t mess with me”

It was the closest she could get to: “I know kung fu. Watch out.”

We (Irene, Dave, Tyler, and I) are thinking about doing a climbing trip out west. We’d be going for a week of climbing in the Utah area, and I’d probably take an extra week to visit all the wonderful people on that side of the country. So! If you live in the west… especially if you’re near:

Chicago
Portland
Seattle
Tuscon
or
Salt Lake City

then let me know and maybe we can meet up.

Pete and I have been approved for an independent research project at the University of New Haven!! This is EXTREMELY awesome because it means I could get my degree as early as May. The unfortunate side effect of this is that I’m going to probably lose more time each week due to… well… research and engineering. BUT we’re researching climbing gear, so it’s bound to be fun.

We’re going to be doing a finite element analysis on various types of climbing carabiners. We’ll compare brands, styles, and finally, the ACTUAL strengths versus those written on the side of the biners. we suspect that there will be some significant safety factors in there. We shall see!

So exciting!

I’m sitting in the Detroit airport waiting for a plane to Chicago. Today was the typical day of business travel with most of the day spent anxiously waiting for various means of transportation. I was upgraded to first class for my flight here from Chicago, but it really wasn’t worth much because the flight was only 30 minutes long.

Although they did take and hang up my coat for me.

Flight.

Posted by mike d. Filed in ExtremeWeb

I am writing this on a plane flying from Hartford to Indianapolis. I am all sorts of uncomfortable at the moment. Ever notice that it’s near impossible to achieve perfect temperature balance on a plane? Right now the atmosphere is grossly hot. I’ve got the fans on full, but all that seems to have done is make it hot and dry. This particular Northwest flight is rather nasty. The seats, at first glance, appear soft and cushiony, but are, in fact, rather disproportionate and just don’t feel right.

The other day Kurt asked me to MSPaint an image of my view inside the plane. Now, normally I resist the urge to do MSPaint on any plane; mainly because I don’t have a mouse. Instead I have to use that little button cursor. It’s horribly inaccurate. But, I figured I might as well throw one together for the sake of 720. So here it is. Enjoy!

Some people don’t really care too much about being unemployed. They collect their unemployment checks and when the next job rolls around, they’ll work it for a little bit and if the get laid off, they’ll just go back to being themselves again. Other people are looking through the papers every day in search of that perfect job. They go to interviews and lose sleep over the lack of work. Some people always seem to have a job. They get new job offers before they even leave their current work. Some people even work a few jobs at once. It’s tough and can be exhausting, but they figure the benefits of the two jobs outweigh the burdens.

There are some jobs that are better for the long term. Others that work really well to get you some quick cash. Once in a job, it can be awkward and tough to leave for a better one… especially if you’re not sure the quality of the new job. Will it be mentally stimulating? Will it challenge you? What are the benefits?

It’s very difficult to understand what it’s like to be unemployed if you’ve got a totally sweet job.

This picture of Ed is classic. Also note the ridiculously short lamp cord. This lamp can only be plugged in (without an extension cord) if it is ON THE FLOOR.
