Skyline 34!

August 7th, 2007 by mike d. in skyline, Features

So Patrick figured out the satellite from last week. It’s the island of Capri off the coast of Italy.
The skyline was Denver. Sadly no one picked that one up. (thanks to Arianne for the photo!)

New game! (WARNING: ANSWER MAY BE IN THE COMMENTS)

This particular edition of the skyline game excites me. I think it has high potential to be figured out by quite a few people.

Here’s the skyline.

Bonus points if you can provide the name of the church. Extra bonus points if you can send me a picture you took of the inside of the church.

Now, the satellite.

Bonus points if you can figure out the significance of the pier in the northwest corner.

Good luck!

I haven’t touched Google Maps yet, but it seems to me that the satellite matches up with the skyline photo. If Mike thinks that a) people have photos from inside the church and b) that a lot of people will figure it out, that probably means that it’s in the northeast US somewhere.

Denver? Hmm. I’ve been there. Shame on me. It looked like a much smaller city from the photo.

I completely forgot about this skyline because of that friction game craziness. But things have a habit of coincidence.

The lead engineers sit a cubicle row over from me and were talking of who would have to go to certain flight test locales that were listed on some list. The county in which this skyline is from was mentioned as being a place on the list, because of its high winter winds being suitable for flight testing.

Lead A: “Who wants to go to [country] in winter? I don’t.”

Lead B: “Yeah, I’ll take Japan, or Montana, but certainly not [country] in winter.”

Me: “I’d go. It sounds fun.”

Anyway, so then I decided to research on Wikipedia a bit to see just how bad the winters are there. And there, I saw a photo of the church that seemed oddly familiar… from Mike’s skyline!

So, I have the answer. And I know the name of the church. I don’t know the significance of the pier though.

You’d think I would have known this one when the photos were first posted.

Consider:
a) I’ve always wanted to go here.
b) This city is a sister city of Seattle.
b) It’s in the Carmen Sandiego game, man!

Wow! This is a momentous occasion as I think it’s the first time Patrick has successfully figured out a non-obvious skyline… before the satellite image.

Well done!

NOT TRUE!

Skyline #5.

I zoomed in that skyline photo to determine read the signs of the highways that crossed in Tulsa. When I posted my success, I still hadn’t identified the Honolulu satellite image yet.

There were a couple of other skylines I pegged first, but those were obvious (or, at least, instantly recognizable to me), and you did say “non-obvious”, which Tulsa definitely was.

Skyline #34 is the Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik
