The Blind Men and the Elephant, by John Saxe

August 17th, 2006 by mike d. in Quickthoughts

It was six men of Indostan
      To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
      That each by observation
      Might satisfy his mind.
      The First approached the Elephant,
      And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
      At once began to bawl:
“God bless me! but the Elephant
      Is very like a wall.”

It was six men of Indostan
      To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
      That each by observation
      Might satisfy his mind.

      The First approached the Elephant,
      And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
      At once began to bawl:
“God bless me! but the Elephant
      Is very like a wall.”

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried, “Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
      To me ’tis mighty clear
      This wonder of an Elephant
      Is very like a spear!”

      The Third approached the animal,
      And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
      Thus boldly up and spake:
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
      Is very like a snake!”

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
      And felt about the knee.
“What most this wonderous beast is like
      Is mighty plain,” quoth he;
      “Tis clear enough, the Elephant
      Is very like a tree!”

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear
      Said: “even the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most:
      Deny the fact who can,
      This marvel of an Elephant
      Is very like a fan!”

      TheSixth no sooner had begun
      About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
      That fell within his scope,
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
      Is very like a rope!”

And so these men of Indostan
      Disputed loud and long,
      Each in his own opinion
      Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right
and all were in the wrong!

      So oft in theologic wars,
      The disputants, I ween,
      Rail on in utter ignorance
      Of what the other mean,
      And prate about an elephant
Not one of them has seen.

This morning on NPR there was a discussion about capital punishment. Apparently there were a few executees who were given inproper ratios of the killing drug cocktail. This resulted, presumably, in crazy amazing pain for the accused pre-death.

The doctor who administered the drugs informed authorities that he didn’t realize there were specific procedures as to how much of each drug should be used.

He also said something along the lines of:

I’m dyslexic and I am prone to mistakes.

That right there is gold. GOLD.

      mm mmm

So this past weekend I finally got my hands on Fast Food My Way, a book by Jacque Pepin on how to cook delicious foods quickly.

I started right in on sunday and made Crab cakes, a salad, and a pasta dish. The pasta dish won the prize for delicious. The picture is below:

      delicious!

The hardest part of the recipe was cutting up the ham and shredding the cheese. Other ingredients included: peas, corn, zucchini, and cooked pasta. The sauce was a Bechemele (sp?) white sauce which was super fun to make. Here’s how:

Take about 2 T of butter and throw it in a sauce pan. Melt it.
Add 2 T of flour and whisk quickly. It will immediately thicken.
Then add 2 C of milk. Whisk and bring it to a boil. The sauce will thicken nicely.
After the sauce is boiling, remove it from the heat and immediately add 1/2 C of heavy cream.

I poured the sauce over the other ingredients and then sprinkled some parmesean cheese on top and broiled it for a few minutes.

And that’s that! easy and delicious!!
