Regarding the “giant pool of warm water”: According to an episode of Little House on the Prairie that my fiance was watching the other night, Native Americans used to “break” their horses (train them to be ridden with a bridle and saddle) in bodies of water, since they couldn’t thrash around as much, and thus toss the rider. Similar principle, only a long time ago.

Having raised horses, I can testify to the fact that they can and do occasionally sleep laying down and not just when sick. They like to take naps in the sunshine, much like cats.

This is the first DMcQ! that I’ve been disappointed by.
Mostly because the Slate Explainer answered it over a month ago.
