    [Edit: updated again 8/18]

It’s time for counting medals again, and this summer, as you all know, has a smackdown for the ages in USA vs. China. And as exciting as that may be… it’s predictable and lame. We’ve got the country with the highest GDP vs. the country with the most people. Of course they are going to spit out a ton of medals.

Let’s take a look at the medal count from two other perspectives:

    Medals per Population
    1) Slovenia (1 medal per 507K people)
    2) Armenia (1 per 600K)
    3) Australia (1 per 648K)

    41) USA (1 per 4.23M people)
    58) China (1 per 19.8M people)

    Medals per GDP
    1) North Korea (1 medal per $370M)
    2) Kyrgyzstan (1 per $1.74B)
    3) Armenia (1 per $1.85B)

    37) China (1 per $49.2B)
    63) USA (1 per $192B)

      Rubber Star

June 13th, 2006 by mike d. in Features, PaintBrush!

      ta-da!

Here’s a “how to” for making a star out of a rubber band.

      Step 1:

Hold a rubber band between the index and thumb of your right hand.

      Step 2:

Point your left hand finger and slide it under the leftmost strand of the rubber band

      Step 3:

grab the rightmost strand of the rubber band

      Step 4:

      pull your left hand back

      Step 5:

Turn your left hand so that it is palm up

      Step 6:

Replace your left index finger with your right pinky finger.

      Step 7:

Compare your results with the picture above!

      Step 8:

This picture shows the top view of your hand.

      Step 9:

Take your left index finger and slide it inside the triangle formed between your thumb and the two strands leaving your thumb. Then bring your left index finger up to the opposite rubber band strand.

      Step 10:
      good
Grab the strand and pull your finger back. Pull it all the way out.

      Step 11:

Compare with the picture above, and prepare to reach with your left middle finger under the rubber strand leaving your right pinky. Then grab the closest middle rubber band strand.

      Step 12:

Pull your index back and adjust your fingers until you have a beautiful rubber band star.

Great job! Join us next time as we embellish the rubber band star with an “inner star.”

DEFY S. McQUAID! #69: No Joke

June 13th, 2006 by smcquaid in Features, Smcquaid

      Phillies!

      The Question

I was recently informed of the site http://www.phillies2008.com

is this for real, or an april fools joke, or what?

      The Answer

It’s no joke. George Phillies is indeed seeking the office of President of the United States as a long-standing member of the Libertarian party. His main competition for the Libertarian nomination is Lance Brown, CEO for People’s Forums. His web site was recently updated and looks a lot more professional and serious than the original version released in April.

Wikipedia has a good amount of information on the subject of third-party candidates for President

There’s also an article on Phillies himself at Wikipedia.

I never had the experience of Phillies at professor during my WPI education, so I don’t have any information on his teaching, but now we can find out everything we could ever dream about his Presidential platform. Brushed by fame, indeed.
