Kiteboard Checklist Updated

June 5th, 2006 by mike d. in Weekend Update!

currently eating: veggie steak stirfry

Most of this weekend was spent healing myself from a cold. Naps and orange juice were plentiful, and laziness was extreme. BUT, one kickin’ thing did happen and that is that I painted my kiteboard.

Check out these photos.

My only concern is that I used spray paint, and I think hard-core boarding will pull the paint off the board. So I’d like to put some sort of coating on top that will prevent the paint from chipping off. Any suggestions?

In other news, I also attended the RPI class on Friday night. It was absolutely remarkable. The class dynamic was fantastic, the teacher was stellar, and my attention was kept for the full 4 hours. I have been in no class like it. I will definitely be applying for the program.

Mike, You need to put a clear coat over your painted on graphics. This is done over all paint and graphics (even vinyl stickers). This protective layer will prevent chipping or peeling and can be polished and waxed to give your board a nice slick underside.

Excellent advice, Mike G. They make clear primer, or you could use clear polyurethane. You might try taking it to the seediest auto body shop you can find, and see if they’ll clear coat it for you for a reasonable price. I think (??) polyurethane can be wet-sanded for and extra glossy shine, but you might want to consult google before you try that.

I was kayaking yesterday on Lake Union, and there was a giant kite in the air. I thought it was a kiteboarder on the other side of the Gasworks park peninsula. Anyway, when I got closer, it turned out to just be a guy standing on the grass in the park harnessed into his giant kite thing.

I like the Stego. Is the Stego some sort of Mike D representative thing? I don’t know if I’ve heard that reference before.

nope. I just love Stegosauruses. I think they are one of the most exciting dinosaurs.

Stegos were always my sister’s favorite, but I don’t know if she thought they were exciting.

Come on, the class couldn’t have been better than Probability with BagO’Beans.

I don’t think thats a stegosaurus. By the shape and orientation of its dorsal plates, it looks more like a SURFASAURUS!

If it’s made of wood, or composite, then polyurethane it, several coats. If it’s made of some alloy, clearcoat it like you would a car. That comes in spraycans as well.
