      A bold move with class.

May 18th, 2006 by mike d. in Quickthoughts

A co-worker saw Vanna White at the airport. He walked up to her and calmly said “How are you doing Vanna?”
      she replied “Good thanks.”

      future

I was talking to a guy who works in manufacturing at my company. He mentioned that he used to do drafting.

mike d: “why’d you decide to leave engineering?”
worker: “one day I looked down at the carpet and it was worn. It had been a new carpet when I started, so I decided it was time to move on.”

How wise! It’s interesting how we rate our lives. Something as simple as a worn carpet is able to convince a guy to change professions.

I’ve noticed numerous times that I’m always kind of looking forward to the future. It’s a consistant battle of “I can’t wait for 5pm” or “I can’t wait for the weekend.” I think enjoying the moment is something that is not done often enough.

As I think more about how to appreciate the life that we are given I usually start thinking about how I should do more rock climbing. Zen and rockclimbing are often discussed together, and recently someone on a thread on rockclimbing.com stated something simple: “Maybe I need to let the rock climb me.”

When I first read it, I didn’t think anything of it. But the more I think about that, the more I like it. Maybe I should take that sort of attitude in my general day to day activities.

      Grad Class

May 18th, 2006 by mike d. in Geekdom, Quickthoughts

I have graduate class on Wednesday nights. I usually arrive a few minutes early and without fail the pre-class conversations are extremely geeky.
This week we talked about our calculator’s computing power. Last week we discussed pencil lead thickness preferences and the usefulness of watches with internal radial slide rules.
