about $1400 for the new rebuilt transmission with a 5 year 50k mile warranty on it. To check out the transmission they would have had to take the transmission out and opened it up anyway, which would have been about 900, and it ended up being cheaper to just go with a rebuilt than have the repair done and have it be unreliable.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm

If you have little knowledge of your automatic transmission, read all the pages in this article, it will give you some insight into the complexity of automatic transmissions and the number of points of failure they have.

We had that problem on The Boat (93 Buick Roadmaster Wagon) and it turned out to be a few clutches had burned out, transmission fluid level didn't change, but pressure did. Ended up having to get a rebuilt one.
