      gettin’ ill

January 3rd, 2006 by mike d. in A Day In The Life...

currently eating: saltines, toast, and/or apple juice

Sunday evening we made the ham. A lot of ham. somewhere between 13 and 16 pounds of ham.

Sunday at 10pm I ate a lot of ham. Monday at 4am I got violently ill.

the events were probably independent of each other, but I still think I’m going to avoid ham for awhile.

And thus started the first illness of 2006. It’s been 8 years since partially digested food left my system via the intake. And unsurprisingly, the process is still completely miserable. Thankfully I had no problems sleeping. And sleep I did. Today I’m back up and moving about, though still not quite myself.

In seperate news, I think I’ve decided that 2006 is going to be the year of music.

      DEFY SMCQUAID! #51: Turtle Power!

      Turtle Power!

      The Question
      Meghan asks:

      Dear Shaun,

Is a turtle’s shell just like, an armor for the actual turtle, or does the shell actually contain all the turtle’s organs and stuff?

      Your sister,
      Meghan

      The Answer

The turtle is an interesting creature, is it not? In fact, the shell is just what it appears to be - a shell. The body of the turtle under the shell houses all the internal organs. One turtle anatomy weirdness is that the lungs of the turtle are just beneath the shell - pretty much pressed up against it - and this means that the turtle breathes by squishing the lungs against the upper shell and then letting them expand.

But yes, definitely the shell is just armor. There’s a bony inner layer and a scaled outer layer. And there is a top layer (the carapace) and a bottom layer (the plastron).

I won’t go into any further detail, since I’m not an expert, but keep in mind - this shell is what allows the turtle to be an excellent candidate for ninja training.
