GROUNDHOG DAY!

February 2nd, 2005 by mike d. in PaintBrush!

currently eating: oatmeal. non-instant.

Happy Groundhog Day!

the origin of Groundhog fear.
Darth Maul?

in other news, apparently during a routine test of the emergency broadcasting system a CT television station mistakenly broadcast a warning sign saying “please evacuate the state”

Despite the potential for panic, I find that really funny.

update:
the groundhog saw his shadow this morning

Thank you.

Can you tell me this if this is wrong: I’ve been unemployed for a while. I got an interview today at a biotech lab. before yesterday I was all psyched and I wanted the job. But the State of MA called yesterday and want to interview me for a fisheries position, which would be full time. Is it bad that I don’t want this interview today to go well, on the chance that I get the State Job?

why did you comment with this under my groundhog day post? It has little to nothing to do with Groundhog day. The state job is with fisheries, not ground rodents.

to answer your question: yes, it’s bad. Assume every interview is your last.

I pay no heed to the strictures of modern america. I do what I want when I want. I wanted to post that here so I did.It is also open to anyone who reads these posts.

I’m also really fat.

Kurt, you must take the interview and give it your all. Not only may it be your last interview, perhaps when you get to the fishery you won’t be interested in that position, or, hard though it may be to believe, they may foolishly not be interested in you. Good luck.

Tv told me that no one bothered to evacuate the CT.

I don’t know if the fact that no one evacuated shows how smart CT is, or if it shows how Dumb CT is.

Well, I’ll tell you what.
There goes my plan to get everyone to evacuate CT so I could pull the largest bank robbery ever without being bothered.

Maybe New Hampshire will fall for it.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this, but how does a beam of coherent light create a shadow. Does a lightsaber
indeed “block” other light somehow, thus creating said shadow? Does it not produce its own light?

Tim, that’s an excellent question.

I actually pondered over this for far too long during the creation of this particular paint drawing. I came to the conclusion that yes, a lightsaber, though its name might indicate otherwise, would cast a shadow.

When we see a lightsaber in a movie, it is bright, but does not appear to emit a significant amount of light. Example: When Darth first engages his lightsaber, his body doesn’t glow red from the lightsaber’s majesty. So, I figured it would probably be opaque enough to block sunlight.

I’m happy to say that upon researching the issue, I found a picture of a lightsaber battle in the outdoors where the lightsabers do, in fact, appear to cast slight shadows.

Wow, good find on that picture there, buddy. I stand corrected.

I think the much simpler answer would have been that you can’t see through lightsabers.

I think Tim was not commenting on the transparancy of the lightsabers, but instead that the lightsaber would act as a source of light. Hence, no shadow.

Exactly.

hmm…
that does make sense. it then becomes a matter of the relative brightness of all of the light sources in the area.
